The importance of putter fitting

Not read the article but it's easy enough to move your grip up or down on a putter. I tend to grip down an inch or 2 so maybe it's not the length of shaft that's the issue but how a player holds the club?

I notice that a lot of players grip their putters right at the bottom of the (putter) grip or even further down on the metal shaft. Suggests that they could do with shorter putters. Shortening my putter from 34" to 33" (same as my floor to wrist measurement) has improved my putting quite a bit.

My putter is 34" but I grip all the way down to the bottom of the grip.

Was after the putter for ages and finally found one on ebay so made sure I won it. Should probably cut it down (like my driver shaft) but I really can't be bothered messing about with it, in case is totally mess it up.

Since I won the comp for the Ping putter fitting last summer my putting has improved massively. I never believed in putter fitting before this, now I would not buy one without a fitting.

Anyone who who is non believer like I was should ask Crow about my putter, I thought he was going to wrap it round my head if I sank anymore with it.

I picked up a putter - had a few hits on the green , liked the feel and bought it. Done the business ever since. No idea what the length is

Putter fitting is for people who have more money than sense, the gullible or the desperate.

A good putter can putt with anything. A bad putter is someone who needs to work at their putting and try a few putters until you get the one you like the feel of. It isn't rocket science and if you need a pro to help with this then you probably need assistance in other areas of your life too. E.g. operating zebra crossings, wiping your backside, getting food in your mouth without spilling it etc. etc.

Isn't there different types of putters for different types of putting swings ?

Not a fitting as such but surely for some it's worthwhile ensuring that the putter suits the way someone is putting.

When buying a Ping putter from a local pro around here it costs nothing for him to ensure it suits the person

My putter is 36 1/2", I lengthened it myself. I just don't get short putters.

How tall are you, how long are your legs, and what is your floor to wrist measurement? Could be that this is the ideal length for you. A friend of mine has lengthened an old Ping Anser style putter to 40" and putts quite well with it, but I borrowed it on the practice green and was absolute hopeless with it. I have gone down from a 36" to 33" putter and now putt much better than I ever did before. Several tour pros use very shortened putters, so there must be some benefit to this.

I genuinely believe I could putt with anything. Reckon it comes from the days of me and my cousins having a putting green in my grandfathers back garden during the summer when we'd play 144 hole matches and you had to use 8 different putters for 18 holes each. Nothing quite like winning or losing a match 23&22.
