I made a revelation this weekend.

I'm a pretty standard iron player and can hit 8 irons 150 and 3 iron 210. This is with custom fitting of my irons.

The problem I have had recently was that my 3 wood and driver distances were only 220 and 230 to 240 yards respectively and although enough to play in local friendly comps, did seem out of sync of my iron distances. I bought these clubs off the shelf brand new in a local golf store standard lie and lofts and regular flex.

However, a quick experiment on the launch monitor showed my driver was completely inappropriate for me and I would be suited to a 12 degree loft with stiff shaft. The difference in distance was spectacular with an additional 25 yards on my drives on average.

Please dont make my mistake and waste money on any show-room clubs and not get properly fitted. Technology is there, make the most of it!

Now where did I leave that spare change?

I agree totally.
Below is a picture of me swinging a soft regular shaft (one below regular)
See how wrong you can be.
Were you not hitting your woods left?

Good thread. I am getting a new driver and fairway in June and intend to visit a Snainton golf at Sandmoor GC to get proper fitted for them, I also made a mistake in getting a Yonex off the shelf via AG who never even offered to have a driver fitted.

I've said this before so apologies if it is sounding like a scratched record but most company's are now advertising their 2009 demo days and most use launch monitors of some description. Its a chance to get out and try the latest models and get your specs. Most of the guys doing the days are ex pro or single figure golfers so they know their stuff and most ranges or clubs will offer a discount if you buy ont he day so you may save money.

Sound advice. When (if) I ever reach the limit of my clubs rather than my own skill level, I'll be making the investment and getting custom fitting. Can see already that mine aren't quite right - too whippy (but that does cause me to slow my swing down and give a bit more control at this stage).

Not matter how much I like the look of the Ping Raputre v2's (I'm a sucker for green - probably no bad thing for an aspiring golfer..) I won't be buying them off the shelf.

Only place I know that custom fit Wilson gear is Thorpe Wood, a muni course in Peterborough. Other than that, I would assume that they have a national fitting center in the UK.

Problem with Wilson is that other club fitters will not touch the Fatshafts and can do little due to the small hosel so an official Wilson fitter is about the only option.
