And so its here..... The Ryder Cup.

Get ready for your local AG to be full of wannabe golfers and anyone with a 7iron and putter looking to rip up the local course.

I cant work out whether this is good for the game or not?

I like the idea of loads of new people enjoying the sport however turning up for 18 holes in a football shirt with out a care for the course or the rules is so frustrating.

I'm not really having a moan i'd say its more of an observation.

Cant wait for this afternoon.

Have to agree especially as the weather is set fair. Fortunately as a member at a private club we don't have the problem of wannabe's just turning up. Agree with AG (and similar) seeing a flux of people thinking anyone can play the game and going out and getting all the gear

This is the problem with my club, they pretty much let anyone on.... even in footy shirts if its the wrong bloke in the pro-shop.

We dont even have anyone out on the course checking fee's have been paid. A society infront of me last week were driving buggys over the tee's and not replacing divots or repairing pitchmarks.

Needless to say that this will be my last year at this club.

where you going to join minty?

Probly Beadlow Manor,

It doesnt run out till may so got a while to decide but I've played beadlow manor twice now and really enjoyed it, plus they are doing a lot of work on the course at the moment.

Your track is the closest one to my house but I dont like the idea of it being waterlogged all the time. maybe i'm being too cautious.

That is why I went out and played at silly O`clock this morning. Looking forward to seeing the state of the course next week.

no, it's a fair enough comment, we lost some members to Abbotsley this year due to the flooding last winter though funnily enough we picked up some from Beadlow. certainly we have much the best greenkeepers, even the guys from John O'G reckon our greens as better than theirs.

Colmworth (North Beds) is possibly nearer but as I said I haven't played it yet. It looks like it would drain well though - we could try it sometime? I suppose you discounted John O'G?

too true,

although I am not a member I play frequently at a private club on sat pm which has a liberal door policy! As a traditionalist and someone who respects golf it hurts me when I see a golf course being abused. Fag butts, beer cans on the tee's, improper clothing etc. Near me there are a number of really decent public tracks but they are managed so poorly I have walked off after a couple of holes before.

Respect the game and as faldo said the spirit.

moan over

my club is attached to a muni course so i have seen them all at all times of the year. why they all decide to go straight out on to a 18 holer is the frustrating bit. there are a number of pitch and putts, 6 holers and 9 holers around to learn on.

Lmao...I cant believe the snobery Ive just read on here, does the football shirt make them better or worse a player than any of you when you started?

The biggest problems/trouble causers/delays/arrogance/abuse/ignorance/chips on shoulders/course abuse/time wasting/abuse of rules and elitism I have come across in my 30 odd yrs of playing this game is nearly always from the late starting mid to older generations (especially those who quickly formed aliaces with seniors or committee members)who spend a fortune trying to be the pretencious champions and image police who form the nucleus of the self appointed dress code committee, or other such cliques.I played at St Andrews in jeans and a rugby shirt, oh how bad a golfer I mustve been...doh :D But you can be certain that when joe blogs turns up in his £100 neatly pressed denims and his 80 quid emaculately pressed England shirt there will be an ARMY of complaints from the eeerrr well dressed . Dress codes are there at many clubs but have been relaxed over recent years, moreso on the course than in clubhouse, I abide by the rules but if they are not there I wear what I like.Ive seen far more scruffy gits who follow dress codes rigidly than I have seen people in other dress forms.I once wore an american designer golf shirt designed for very hot climate and meant to be hanging loose, I got told to tuck it in my pants as it wasnt allowed, I asked them to show me the rule, they couldnt find one that applied to my attire but still insisted, so I took my business along with 3 friends and our money back down the road to a club that were happy to have 4 single figure handicappers playing and paying.Look at how people behave not how they dress and if dress is your thing take a long look at those following the written or un-written codes of dress, you may find a different view in there. ;)doubtful but you never know.

Have you been drinking as much as me today? Or is there another reason why you went on your rant?

We aint bitched about chavs in football shirts etc, just when idiots rock up to a decent course believing they can play the game and hold up people and leave the course in a terrible condition, it happens at every major sporting event like Wimbledon or the snooker world champs, it attracts loads of new members to think they are the next best thing and treat the game like crap.

Excuse the spelling and grammar, blame the wine, beer and spirits.

just wrote a big long reply but have lost it so here goes a shorter response.

Herb,

I'd like to stop you in your tracks, I'm not a snob nor would I mock anyone for there golfing ability.... you only need to see my game to know why i wouldnt do that.

However I do believe that you have to adhere to certain rules when visiting a golf club, dress code being one of them.

I 'm only 25, grew up on a council estate and used to nick peoples golf balls off the fairway when i was in my early teens. However now I am a paying member I believe I have the right to feel that visitors should have to adhere to the same dress code that members do.

I personally think its dis-respectful to turn up at any golf club in jeans and a football/rugby shirt and expect them to let you on the course.

Each to there own though mate.

Disrespectful to what? I played at St Andrews dressed that way, how am I disrespectful, what defines lack of respect for a golf course?

You like many seem a little ott on dress issues, are you as critical and condemming towards attitude/unruly play/intimidation/abuse of people as well as course?

It wasnt me who linked the naughty issues to the way someone is dressed ,quickly backed up by others, was it.

I then received a little abuse myself which was expected, but un justified...........

The definition of MATE is as clear as your mistake.
.

Why is it only in golf where people think that they can dress inappropriately and that it should be OK and that anyone who doesn't like it must be a stuck up snob?

Show up at any organised football league wearing anything other than football kit - will you be allowed to play?

Try it at Rugby Club? Not only would you not be allowed to play, you'll most likely receive a good natured kicking on your way out the door.

Try getting on a bowling green wearing ice skates. You'll soon learn about attire being inappropriate for the sport. :D

Bottom line.....if you want to play golf - wear golf gear. It's only the standard that every other sport expects.

If you played at St Andrews dressed like that I take it was either the Balgove or the hymalias that you were on as if it was on the main courses then sorry I reckon you are spinning us a yarn....

A dress code is there for a reason and it should be adhered to.

As far as I am concerned, jeans are workwear and have no place whatsoever in a golf clubhouse or on the course.

Yes tarring people with the "scrote" brush because of dress is harsh but from all my bad experiences on p&p courses, the one common denominator is that they were dressed in an inappropriate fashion for the golf-course.

o hell with all this pussy footing about. You turn up at a course dressed incorrectly, your clearly taking the pi** it doesn't matter if your upper/working class, rules manners etiquete are all to be followed. Not only is it simple manners and respect, it's years of tradition. I don't care who you are, how good you are, if you insist on dressing improper with the attitude it doesn't make me a lesser person, your wrong, it does.

People make a big deal out of it because it is an attempt to keep the discipline backbone in the game, such a discipline that has made the sport what it is today.

good stuff tony, wanted to say something like that last but couldn't trust myself after the amount I drank.

Well it was the Old course as I know it well and unless its status has changed its still municipal course. iknow members there and ex members and you see how peoples perceptions cloud reality, or do you?

I have no reason to lie and pretend to be someone Im not or do something I have not, Ill leave that to others
