I witnessed a revolt against the courses trolley ban on Sunday!! It was soooo funny watching people in disbelief as they would have to carry or not play at all, it made it funnier when the greenkeeper came into the pro shop and told of the temp greens and that trolleys would be ok on the marked lines, but still they held firm and kept the ban or close the course full stop!!

The members where not happy, the course had been closed for 11 days and reopened on Saturday, to which received 12 players allday due to the rain and this added to the pain and anger shown to the Pro yesterday morning when the ban was introduced  I couldnt contain my smug self with my stand bag parked outside and watched the first guys with cart bags slog them around the course.

Though I shall be buying a trolley when I get my paper handshake, I couldnt believe they where moaning about not being physically able to carry a half set in a pencil bag and demanded to use their trolleys in such a way to the Pro's assistant, was funny though.

Although not a Trolley Ban as such, we have marked areas 20-30 yards around the greens with "NO TROLLEYS" painted in bright white.

Amazing that no-one can read as there are loads of wheel marks near the greens!

If the course felt a trolley ban was necesary than there should be no argument. Its implemented to assist the course cope with the conditions at this time of the year.

Of course the biggest problem is that cart bags are getting bigger and heavier and would be fairly difficult to carry for 4 hours.

A trolley ban is a trolley ban full stop & there are reasons for it.

Having said this I've carried around my cart bag before at various places with no ill effects, though it does grate a bit when you are out there & there are at least half a dozen players in plain view simply ignoring the ban. So some places clearly will not police the ban even if it is in place.

In winter trolley, whether pulled or powered are really not a good solution & I certainly prefer to carry over the winter unless the ground is firm.

What we have had recently has been a spate of having buggies on all week, in horrendous conditions, so the lazy idiots in the societies can get drunk and cut up the course playing dodgems, but banning them at the weekend when a couple of members with medical conditions need them to play. Even if it hasn't rained on Thurs/Fri/Sat, still ok on Friday, banned on Saturday. Nonsense.

We don't have a trolley ban, but the course was shut all weekend due to waterlogging. TBH, I played 6 holes on Friday, and it should have been shut. If it is wet enough for a trolley ban, then even walking/carrying will do damage. Just close the course.

Ditto the white lines in front of the greens. I don't mind the lines, but we often have ropes all over the course too. They only come down for our open. Obviously don't want the scratch boys seeing the course look like a depot for string storage, but we have to put up with it all year.

Rant over (for now).

Roll on summer.

I've been carrying since October. It makes no sense to me to use a trolley when its this wet.

I too say Roll on Summer - or at least Spring as long as its dry

We were put on trolley ban at my local, but invited to pay £30 for hedgehogs in the pro shop!

Needless to say, this wasn't popular so they have now put hedgehogs on all of their rental trolleys. £2.50 isn't too much to ask so everyone is happy.

Our course also bans the use of trollies if there is frost on the ground. As I am usually an early starter I always have a lightweight pencil bag in the boot just in case. Chuck 6 or 7 clubs in and away I go. No probs.

From October onwards through to about March I always change to my carry bag. But have my PK in the boot with a fully charged battery. The ogio stand bag sits quite nice on the PK so if I fancy using the trolly it's not a problem. This way I can never get caught out.

Which Ogio do you have? I ask because the wife is getting me one for xmas and in April I might be getting a trolley and makes sense to think about the Ogio Edge, but the Hoode thingy is a pain to carry I have heard so was thinking of the Grom.

It's the Grom that I have, but also the latest PK's where they fasten at the top, they grip the bag.

I overheard yesterday that we won't be putting a trolley ban in place unless it is frosty. Basically it can be waterlogged and sodden and you can still use a trolly (albeit with hedgehogs) but a bit of frost and a ban. Total madness.

The course was way too wet on the back nine to be open this weekend. There are temporary greens mown on every hole but none have even got a hole cut into them. No wonder the members moan in Summer about the state of the greens.

It makes perfect sense in my innocent world, to put all the greens to temps Monday-Thursday and cut the proper greens once a week on Friday and play the weekend on them. The only people who would moan are the regular old timers who play in their regular Tuesday and Thursday roll ups. There is not much winter traffic Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and the women have already said they are happy to use the temps. It seems that our club pay too much attention to a small minority just because they play several times a week and fail to look at the bigger picture or risk upsetting anyone. To be fair I'd be happy if some of these guys took umbrage at having temps and buggered off somewhere else.

.....and breath and relax!

I think its out of order to question trolly ban's.
They are imposed for a reason and it is usually the fault of motorised trollies rather than the pull type.

I was looking at our course today after a comp, you all know the weather we have all experienced recently, well the course at certain points was chewed up and sloppy/muddy as f***. I pulled my trolly over the same area and then the area alongside and saw zero damage or messing up.

Its all to do with the weight of these things and the fact that they are self driven requiring friction etc, this is where after a short time with lots of them going over the same ground they make a bloody mess.

You could see the tracks of these trollies spreading out over a distance, I looked at my tracks and could barely see them(if ay all), the only thing that needs traction is me through my feet, that and the fact that my complete rig is lighter.

I can remember playing golf and never seeing a motorised trolly,I can even remember never seeing a trolly ban until their popularity increased at one club I was a member, now they are everywhere. I have no complaints about their use in summer or conditions where ground is solid, but conditions like these I agree with a ban on motorised trollies and pull trolly if necessary. I didnt play for about a week and in that week the course around tees, initial pathways, entry to fairways is an absolute mess, it wouldnt surprise me if they close the course for repairs.

Most people who use these trollies I would wager, do not look at the weather and think, 'Oh I wont take it today, I will take the pull trolly or just carry' no! you can tell by how many use them in the rain when its already rained the night before and all week before that, MOST of them.

I do hope this club I have joined are not going to let a potentially great course go to a mess or pander to the wishes of a number of lazy selfish people who in my view have already messed up the course, its a course that can stay open all year round and very rarely bad enough to stop trollies, but when it is they should and in fact golfers should recognise it and not need to be told.

Grass is a weed. It will all bounce back in the spring. My old track was an absolute swamp for 6 months of the year, never closed, and was on the proper greens all year round. It was also a 9 holer, so got double the wear. For the other 6 months of the year, the grass was lush (too much so really), and the greens were consistently the best for miles around (they have a reputation for stupidly fast greens, which are true to boot).

I think its a case of being a bit sensible, but that seems to be something that a lot of people lack nowadays. Am I also the only person that prefers to carry rather than pull a trolley? I always found it quite hard work pulling that around a course with a few slopes, and generally find carrying much easier.

I would rather carry than pull, but top of the pile is electric trolley. So much more civilised, and you can carry so much more junk than you can when carrying.
