Why is it called so, it's usually a hole that has given you repeated round crushing scores and beats you down ,dreading every time you stand on the tee.

I have such a hole, 400yd par 4, O.B left, O.B right, and a 200yd carry across the O.B from the medal tees. and the prevailing wind pushing you to the right, oh joy.

Yes there is a bale out area but you'll not reach the green in two if you lay up.

I have no issues with the carry distance , but i can only seem to hit a grasscutter or slice into the O.B, it's like a magnet :(

How do you all deal with such a hole.

Take the bale out option, settle for a bogey, far better than sticking OB, and even if you don't hit the green in 2 you will still have a chance to get up and down for a par.

To be honest, unless you are scratch or better, you are going to be hitting bogeys during the round anyway.

I have just checked your intro thread and seen that you are currently playing off 17, why do you let one hole play on your mind, just try and limit the potential damage, play it safe and look to score on the holes that don't have the same problems.

Its called course management. I used to go for everything and wondered why my handicap wasn't dropping, now I play with a little more patience and it pays off.

Go the bale out route then.

Even a 3-putt Double is fine on that hole. But if you practice your short game, you might even get a Par!

Playing to your capability - aka course management - is the best way to make a good score!

Yes bob, S.I 5, but it is a very tough green where 3 putts are common

Are three putts common from those who lay up and chip on with their third?

I recall a cat1 golfer questioned the course designer on the difficulty of the SI1 par 4 and the response was to say, you have a shot on it, you're not supposed to make par!

Sounds to me like the hole has beaten you before you even tee off! It's another hole, just one of 18 on the course. Stand on the tee, commit to the shot and tell yourself you can make a birdie.

Unless you change your mental attitude it is going to beat you every time

spot on!

and at only 400 yds it's basically only a short par 4 anyway

find something that works for you - 3 x 8 irons for example and go from there

My advice play it as a par 5 even a net 5 is acceptable at your present h/c.
Once you master that hole , no doubt a different hole will suddenly become your bogey for a while .

It is our last hole, agreed it's a mental block, made many a par and many a cricket score,
we have a medal on saturday, it'll depend on how i've played up till that point but unless i'm playing like rory i may take the layup.

Thanks for the input folks.

Only 1 hole on the course that gets me. An uphill par4 405yrds, Si 2. Off the tee it's a killer, the whole fairway feeds off right down towards rough and trees. A ball here and you've got zero chance of making the green. Bunker 220yrds left off the tee, just infront of the only safe point on the hole. The bunker is 30yrds long so it's a monster carry off the tee up hill. The green is blind and you need to carry it all the way as it has a false front. Green is pretty big but has lots of slope.
So it's a layup from the tee short of the bunker and then try and catch a fairway wood sweet or layup/layup/wedge to a blind green and hope for a good putt.

Cat 1 and you layup??

How deep is the bunker on the left ?

Wow. Wish my bogey hole was just that. I'd be happy all day long.

It's our 455 yard Par 4 11th. SI 1, for good reason.

OB all down the left, trees all down the right. Any tee shot on the right side of the fairway and you're blocked out from the green by trees. And the fairway runs left to right as well.

I've tried all sorts or tactics. I usually play it as a Par 5. So hybrid, mid-iron, wedge it on and a couple of putts seems to be my safest play most of the time. But still manage to make a hash of that sometimes as I have a habit of over-drawing my hybrid OB on that hole

Even tried 3x7i's to get me there when I had a really good score going, only to snap hook my 2nd 7i OB then fat my next one 10 yards. Argh.

I've racked up plenty of 8, 9 and 10's on there over the past 18 months of membership.

Your mind is focusing on the hazards so thats probably where you will put the ball. Pick out a target in the distance on the line you want to hit, something like the top of a tree or a building, line up on that and focus on it while committing to the shot, don't even consider the hazards and you will have a much better chance of making a good score.

The Shire pretty much solves any 'Bogey' hole issues, as pretty much every hole can bite! Haven't had a Par on SI18 for about 10 rounds - 3 or 4 Birdies and an Eagle; the rest Bogeys!

I get a shot on half of them, but that doesn't guarantee 2 points and the ones I don't get shots on are easy to drop shots on as well! The Par 5s seem to be the problem for me currently! Just can't carry the ball far enough (mainly the 2nd shot is at fault) to get a short shot into greens!
