Never realised how poor some golf balls are. Considering I learnt to play with lake balls or very cheap balls topflight/donnay. Moved into Bridgestone e6 about 6 months ago. Was out on the course the other day and lost my only e6 I had with me. Was fuming for starters. Then had to play the remaining 11 holes with a topflite. Was like hitting a brick, really couldn't tell whether I'd struck it well or not. Can't believe I ever found these balls playable. Literally worse than some of the range balls. They say these cheap balls are built for distance. But I even saw a drop off in that. Hitting a drive was honestly a lottery. Anyone have similar/opposite experiences? Also felt awful with wedge shots. What's your ball of choice? Reasons?

I play a Titleist NXT or Pro V1/X. The reason is because I think I am a much better player than I actually am! :D. On a serious note I have played Bridgestone and Srixion and I just like the Titleist balls (although the B330's) were very good.

My playing partner is off +3 and uses any ball he finds. I shot my best round this year with a pinnacle gold. So i dont agree with your statement. A golf ball will not go offline if it's struck correctly. It might if there's problems with the ball such as a cracked outter shell.
I agree they feel like bricks when you hit some of them

A pp who has got back into golf got his first hcap of 24 back end of last season. He is a good lad, when he bought his new shiny stuff he paid £100 for bag and clubs, a make I have never seen or heard before. but he is happy with it.
He plays with Top flight balls because he played with them "last time" 20 yr ago?

He did exactly the same lost a top flight a another pp gave him a callaway. He could not believe the difference, he said he will use and lose his top flights then buy some differant balls.

PP who gave him the callaway, told him that rather than just go out and buy any cheap balls he will talk to him and advice him which balls best suit his game.

It is odd watching him in this stage of his golfing career, that was me 4 yr ago.all golf equipment inc balls has come on leaps and bounds since he and I first played golf 20 yrs ago.

I think it's more about consistency. If you pull out a brick, play for a few holes, lose it and then pull out a Pro-v etc etc you are just introducing another variable into the process. Play with similar balls consistently, be they hard/soft then you will eliminate one thing that could be an issue and then you can concentrate more on the other seven hundred and sixty two (at the last count) things that could go wrong!

TBH, this time of year i play with anything, on the soft greens even a Pinnacle stops. I have to admit i don't have any topflights, as they must have fallen in use as i hardly ever find them when walking the dogs on the course either.

I agree. Rock hard top flights and distance balls are next to useless to me.

I knock the odd one round in practice but would rather use a second hand premium ball or even a lake premium ball over a rock or mid range ball.

I want the ball to stop on the green asap.

I use the e6, like you. It is a beautiful ball with good straight distance, feels great off of the club, and it is nice on the green. I used to use the Nike PD soft, which is also nice, but isn't as straight as the e6. I just stocked up with them because Bridgestone are pulling out of the UK, and Srixon are approaching retailers and swapping stock. How anyone can use Top Flight or Pinnacle balls is beyond me. I was told by my good friend and golf pro ALWAYS use the same type of ball on a regular basis.
