50th birthday party in a working mans club in Newcastle. Cheap beer wye aye but last orders called at 10.50. Nothing served after 11. The nasty evil witch from behind the bar stood in the queue and waved away all protests. I kid you not. We had a taxi booked for 12.15 as we were told it was on till 12. Oh no it's not. Good god. Unbelievable. Luckily we scrounged a lift back from a nice lady who I had to use my long forgotten powers of persuasion on. Rusty as they are I managed it. What a shock that has been to my system. No wonder the government treats us Northerners badly. We treat our own like crap.

The woman behind the bar is allowed to go home. If her shift finishes with the bar closing at 11 then 11 it is. Why should she stay later?

The fault is with your duff information for when the night finished. Give the poor woman a break.

Never, ever take on the woman behind the bar in a working men's club. Nails, absolute nails 😬

We had a pit reunion last Xmas. Bar was open til 12.30. There were a dozen lads supping and there were three girls behind the bar. The woman gaffer said am shutting this bar down at midnight and you can get your orders in the other bar. 10 yds Max further. A trustee threatened her with the sack, oh how it kicked off. Think she is married to a miner coz she taught said trustee a few new words. She sent two girls home and she still has her job.

Don't they do 'lock ins' anymore then?

The one I go to does, depends on how the land lord feels.
Then it’s killer pool, pumps emptied and left on bar. and the ashtrays come out and go home smelling like an ashtray. Missus reckons I started smoking again.

23.00 is too early to close up!

So, you went somewhere for cheap beer and were misinformed about opening hours.

Does the Government really single out northerners?:D. Tough life

On other theme, our village pub is more restaurant than pub these days, opening hours are dependent on what’s going on...walked the dog at 6:30 tonight, thought I’d nip in for a swift one....they were closed. Lovely sunny Sunday.... closed. I understand they don’t want to stay open if it’s dead, but if the locals are bemused by the hours, I fear for its future.

Anyone ever worked in a bar or restaurant? I did for a spell as a teenager. Trust me, watching people getting drunk whilst you are working is not fun. When your time is up you want to go home, any delays grate like you wouldn't believe. I get a landlord who has the pub as their business doing a lock in but an employee, no chance. They get to go home later than they should, when they are already tired, just so drunk people can get even more drunk.

I really thought I'd have the backing the lads on here. I hear your comments, but we were told 12 finish by the lady who's party is was because she had been told that it was ok to go to 12. I've no problem with people finishing when they have done their shift, but these were a miserable three witches. Two older ones and one young trainee witch....dressed all in black too. And actually the beer weren't that cheap either. To be turned away from joining the back of a queue at the bar just isn't on. Oh well. Probably saved us best part of £30 by forcing us to go early.
I'll look forward to others moaning when they get caught in a similar situation. :D

Err then don’t work in a bar or restaurant

It was a restaurant so people are not necessarily supposed to. My point was that you accept what happens but when your shift is over you want to go home. Staying later, perhaps for no extra money or not sufficient extra, is not worth it just so people can have more of a skin full. The owners can stay, they are the ones who gain, but the hourly paid workers, no chance. I should add, I am talking here about working beyond your hours. If your hours are 6-12 then that is what you work. Just don't expect the person working in the bar / restaurant to jump for joy if you ask to keep going to 1am. It is tiring at that time. Day shift, easy to do an extra hour but not late on. All in the past for me, it was 30yrs ago for my time as a waiter but I still remember parts of it and I have every sympathy for people working in the industry.

Herself has worked in 'hospitality' or bar work as it was known back in the day...
And, in general, you don't get treated too well by customers...
And, it only gets worse the more is consumed...
