The cut shot

I've seen Tom Watson do a cut shot where he takes the club ( sand wedge I think) back on the outside and cuts across it quite vigorously to land the ball on the green From Green side rough. Truly a awesome shot

That sounds like a flop shot, not a cut.
A cut is also known as a fade, a left to right movement of the ball in the air, not as pronounced as a slice and usually hit on purpose (unlike a slice!).
It's the opposite of a draw.

Monty is the master of the cut shot, ive had the pleasure of watching him play a few times and how he controls which is in effect a slice is incredible. This controlled slice has earned him a lot of titles and a lot of money.

I play cut wedge shots like this. I found this worked for me. strangely its a strong right hand that helps to hold it off. swing a little out to in.

I've always differentiated between the 2 - though others don't - depending on whether it's done for a specific reason or just my natural shape.

(Rightee) Club cuts across the ball from right to left, imparting fade (left to right) spin. Ball flight at end of flight is higher and slower, so lands softer than if no spin. (Much) more aggressive cut makes ball go higher, short and swerve more (longer irons) or simply flop onto the green - when played with a wedges near the green- thus the 'flop' shot.

Fixed that for you ;)

The cut shot is my stick shot - nice high left to right gentle fade landing soft

It's what amateurs (myself included) call the shot when they slice it but it ends up where they hoped it would ;)

It's also something you need to shout at the ball if there is trouble left and it's heading that way.

This is what I thought. A fade lands on the centre line to your target having started a bit left, then curved back rightwards. ie opposite of a draw. A cut starts on whatever line necessary to curve rightwards past whatever is in the way of your normal direct route ??

The easiest full golf shot to control, there is a reason that Tiger, Hogan, Nicklaus, Hogan, Trevino, Mickelson and Palmer all played cut shots as there go to shots. I believe that it is the most natural shot to play as everyone slices the ball when they start playing golf.

When I started playing I had a horrible slice that now has developed into a controlled fade that is totally reliable. I've decided to stick with what I've got. I can easily get a 60 yard fade if required But would generally just aim up the left then give it a whack. I do lose the odd one but don't we all.

Trying to lose the right to left with the driver and get a more controlled left to right. It's suppose to be a fade and come back to the centre of the fairway but perfecting a cut into the right hand rough. It's not far off coming right. Much more control when I get it right

Most people start with a Slice/Fade then learn how to Draw/Hook the ball then when they get better try to Fade it again. :)
