Has anyone been to watch the world championships before?Tickets are on sale tomorrow I believe for 2017 and wondered what the chances of getting tickets are, how much are they? Can you buy semi-final/final tickets? Is there a ballot?Whats it like watching live compared to on telly?

Yes, I've been there.

Yes you can get tickets and for pretty much any session you like up to and including the final if you're in the queue tomorrow morning.

And it's night and day watching it live. I'm biased of couse (hence my forum name) but you can't really appreciate how skillful the players really are until you see them in person.

I had no choice but to lie on my sofa for 7 days recently and watched snooker and dozens of episodes of "Homes under the hammer" - you can't help gazing in awe at their ability, professionalism and style .......... then the snooker came on!!

Went a few times to Wembley... For The Masters... Was a good day out...
Atmosphere was great when the 'local hero' stepped out into the arena...

It's this that doesn't do it for me, you might get an atmosphere when certain players initially come out, but that's it, you then sit in silence with the odd ripple when you're able to clap.

Went to Uni in Sheffield, live near Preston and have been to the snooker many times. Even after Uni we've (myself and mate Matt from Uni)only ever bought advance tickets for the first session we wanted to watch, then would just pick up what ever was available over the few days we had booked in the hotel. Never missed a session we wanted to get into but really only ever look at the first two rounds as you get a wide range of players. Haven't ever attempted to get into the semis or final though.

The only downside we've ever had was when we decided in 1997 to get tickets for O'Sullivan's first session against (against Mick or Mark Price?). Cue (pun intended) for him to hit his 147 in 5min 20s the day after..... watched it about 100 yards away in the Monk pub on TV, so close yet so far.

The Crucible is simply the best place to watch snooker. Go, you'll really enjoy it!

Thanks for all your replies. It's wetted my appetite even more even though I have seen more than one person asleep in crowd I don't think that will be me.

I play a bit of snooker (not very well I may add) and appreciate how good these players are. It will be something else to watch them live.

Yeah, give it a go. Used to go to the UK in Preston "back in the day" with Higgins, Davis, Thorne, Virgo, Taylor, Griffiths (zzzz), Thorburn (zzzz) etc. Like any sport it's just great to see it live.

.....a little snooker/golf story.......when Cliff Thorburn was World Champion he was invited to play at a local club and after the round in the bar they set up the balls only to be told by the steward that non-members were not allowed on the snooker table. Despite someone having a quiet word to explain who he was etc, the steward wouldn't budge. Rules is rules..... lol.
