Just watching the news and heard that the cost so far in Libya has cost Britain 250 million, and its obviously going to rise.
In this economic climate were we right to take the lead against Gaddafi?
With whats happening in Greece, spain, portugal are we really in a fanancial position to get involved in every war.
I can see problems ahead fanancially for us.

What about the income from war?
Defense contracts etc?

Also longer term, what about cheaper commodities, like oil, due to a greater supply being available?

True we have revenues from war, however we are supplying the likes of Gaddaffi to kill his own people.
We were also told we wouldnt take the lead against Lybia and it would cost only 10s of millions not 100s.
Of course we need defence, but getting involved in every war surely will put the economy under a lot of strain.
Of course i dont have the figures its only an assumption.
We as a nation will be looking over our shoulders for ever, not a great outlook

The more strife in the Middle East the higher the cost of oil - the higher the cost of oil, the more wealthy GB is due to our oil supplies - the higher the cost of oil the more exploration/extraction from the deep sea borings off Shetland .. more tax income from oilfields ..the more people working in the industry.. the more tax income they pay!!

OIL price of $120 falls to $50 .. No 11 in deep s*it!

the country should be lucky its only costing £250 million so far, if we had the resourses we really needed, especially out in afghan, it would cost MUCH more!! i see first hand how cheap the government are when it comes to war

I'm a reporter for a defence website and I was told by an officer that although the cost of war seems high, some of the costs would've been incurred anyway.

Just to explain that, he gave the example of the costs attributed to keeping some of the jets/UAVs in the air. A high percentage of these jets would've had to be flown anyway in training missions, so in effect they're killing two birds with one stone. Another example would be that some explosives come with a use-by-date, so the ones closest to expiry are being used first.

its all about israel, interestingly all of the middle east/arab and muslim world hate jews(to the point that they would happily see them all dead) they see the west supporting israel (as traditionaly christian nations the hierachy has always prevented the obliteration of israel/jews) the persecution of jews in ww2 ended with Israel becoming a nation again.

that however wouldnt be the case if a)the winners of the war hadnt forced it to happen and b)those allied nations didnt continue to protect that said nation.

Israels only neighbour who dont believe they should be exterminated is the Med.

the world is delicated poised, nuclear war is only really a possiblity under Arabic/Islamic command, as they value thier lives as being well spent if they obliterate themselves whilst ending their enemies. US/China/Russia are the only folk with Trident currently.

Oil is currently these countries only bargaining tool, so long as we keep them fighting internally every ten years or so they wont be able to progress enough to pose a nuclear threat.(id imagine thats the west thinking atm)

I'm ashamed that we are involved in trying to force regime change in Lybia, its absolutely nothing to do with us, and nothing to do with Human Rights, and gaddafi 'killing his own people.

If we are that bothered about TinPot Dictators killing their own people, we would have gone in to Zimbabwe years ago, as well as quite a few other African States.

Purely about Oil, and the potential for lucrative results of regime change, - quite honestly, - none of which will make a scrap of difference to you or I.

However, some bigwigs somewhere, not to mention those 'in the know' in Government, will stand to profit massively somewhere along the line.

Think Halliburton, or UK equivalent.

Not connected, but watch Farenheit 911 if you ever felt inclined to 'trust' anyone in Government.
