Can anyone tell me the the truth about the said club..
The chipper..my mate uses one ot these quite regular and to be fair he is pretty good with it from just off the greens,but I have read that the CHIPPER is not an offical golf club,I also know many of the big manufactures do not make them..

Officially, it's a Golf Club....

For the vast majority it's the work of the Devil and should be consigned to Room 101 without further delay. Anyone caught using one should be rendered imobile by the slicing of the legs just below the knee - preferably using a sharpened 1 iron.......

An abomination!!!!!

Wait a minute, that's a bit unfair, Dodger uses one... :cool:

Decision 4-1/3

A "chipper" is an iron club designed primarily for use off the putting green, generally with a loft greater than ten degrees. As most players adopt a "putting stroke" when using a chipper, there can be a tendency to design the club as if it was a putter. To eliminate confusion, the Rules which apply to "chippers" include:

1. The shaft must be attached to the clubhead at the heel (Appendix II, 2c);
2. The grip must be circular in cross-section (Appendix II, 3(i)) and only one grip is permitted (Appendix II, 3(v));
3. The clubhead must be generally plain in shape (Appendix II, 4a) and have only one striking face (Appendix II, 4d); and
4. The face of the club must conform to specifications with regard to hardness, surface roughness, material and markings in the impact area (Appendix II, 5).

As long as it doesn't have fat grips etc it is fine but why waste one of your 14. Better learning to use your irons or even your hybrid.

Apart from the various "moral" arguments about using a "chipper" I think the main issue is that a lot of them have 2 striking faces to enable them to be used right or left handed. That renders them illegal.

The really big manufacturers don't make chippers but they are made by Ben Sayers, MD, Benross, Wilson Staff and Odyssey. You would be struggling to find a version of the illegal 2-faced chipper - except on fleabay.
I have to smile at the sniffy, high-minded condemnation of the humble chipper by a number of players - it's only a club and if it works for you, what's the problem. Do we all need 14 clubs in the bag anyway?

They are sold in AG etc and so I am pretty sure they are all conforming. Even in the darkest hours of my short game horrors I never contemplated using one and to me they are the last resort - the broomhandle of the short game world

i remember back in the 80's my friends mum whipping out the old Bronty Chipmaster & it doing her quite well

personally not for me - as im sure ive made my personal opinions about certain clubs chippers, broom-handles etc clear on these forums b4 :)

but as long as theyre conforming (not twin faced,as others have pointed out) theyre fine

but i just think it a club wasted as u can usually do same job with a 5,6 or 7 iron etc

Seem's to be a handy club to have. There's talk about learn to use another club to do the job rather than have one, but my argument to that is simple. Some people have 4 bloody wedges in their bag! There's no need for that many, lean to use your pitching wedge or one of your other wedges better and get a chipper too.. There, simples. Best of both worlds.

My work here is done, next subject...

Isn't the loft of a chipper just the same as an eight iron though?

But not as we know it, Jim.

Chipper - dictionary definition.

"a type of golf club, generally used in a parallel universe, favoured by players who prefer said club to, say, a 7 iron in the same way that they prefer alien females to human women for mating rituals"

100% true that. I found it on outerspace-google.mars.

Played with a 12 hcp golfer the other evening who used one of the above mentioned choppers from anything inside 100 yds.

And there was I struggling to decide which of my 4 wedges or my 7,8 or 9 iron to chip with...

Not exactly golf though...
