Hi all.

Just wondered if this is still on the cards?

I can see the logisitcal problems of such an event and wondered if that is why it has died off perhaps.

Nice to see so many regional events being planned/played, of course ours is on Thursday.

Would be nice to have a larger event for a lot of us so if anyone is still up for it and has a suggestion i'm sure there will be a lot of open ears. HID has cleared a weekend away for me when I fancy.

There are loads of us from Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Berks, London, Essex etc so sure we could make a great event with good golf and a good few beers afterwards for those that partake.

I've been thinking the same myself - seem to remember bunkermentality was prime mover and he seems to have gone off radar - or does he have a new ID?
I was hoping for somewhere west-midlands or cheshire area , assuming Soputh West is too far for most, but am open to suggestions (oops - just remembered - have to sort my golf first!)

I am up for this but like TonyN says someone needs to run with this. Logistically getting everyone accomodated (date and venue) isn't going to happen, but surely we can do something. Personally anything within a 2-3 hour drive from Nottingham is workable for me. Come on guys and girls, lets do this. Woooooooo! (Sorry, saw Rik Flair on TV this morning).

Perhaps a large meet for the respective large areas should be organised.

If all those interested in a southern event make their intentions known, and I have a rough idea of numbers, I would be happy to take some organisational responsibility for the event.

Homer and I reckon the nationwide idea might be struggling.
I said that if the right venue came up, many would be prepared to travel......but it's not looking that good.

If mwj wants to cover SE, I'll offer W Midlands.....there's a big contingent over in the east midlands....I'm sure one of these guys will shout up. Maybe, as things are proving tough, we should set up a "grab a county" thread?

I did suggest the idea of hosting a series of local events (SE, Scotland, Midlands, North of England, SW) and maybe having say the top 2 at each one go through to a national final.

If we can do the initial qualifying events ourselves it may be easier to go to GM for help with the final (quality location, prizes etc). I was thinking about a GM nationwide stableford competition. Most of us have official handicaps so it and by doing a stableford one bad hole doesn't ruin everything.

The final could be somewhere central and over 18 holes so in theory it should reduce travelling time and the need for overnight stays (although that can't be guaranteed).

Medwayjon,

Perhaps we could split the SE event down a bit. Maybe have the SE as Kent Essex and Sussex and then have one for London, Berks, Surrey, Oxon and Hants.

I know HTL was looking to do a Surrey meet so I'm sure we can expand that to include the areas mentioned above. That would make it a lot more accessible to those in the Shires.

I think somethin in the middle of GB an ireland would be best (north west:D) might be the best solution with regard to travelling. Obviously where ever is picked people will have to travel further than others but a central location would be as fair as possible right?

Dont think it will be that hard. Some one set a date and venue then definite names added to the thread.

Am sure between each other people can sort out travel and accomodation together to save on costs etc.

Once the ball is rolling it should all come together. Its like anythin, hardest part is getting started!

I think the big problem was with location. The North West was touted and several courses mentioned. The problem being that for many it meant a weekend away which was proving troublesome to some which was why we have been having our own local meets.

If we did it as regional events and we get GM on board with somewhere for a grand final it gives us all a target to aim for (bit by Open qualifying). If someone got to the finals it would be a lot easier to explain to HID etc that they were in a major event with coverage but the number 1 golf magazine in the UK.

That way the only things that need fine tuning are final date and venue, how many per region to qualify, the competition format (medal, stableford). It should be easier to organise at a local level because of the reduced travelling/accommodation costs.

I can understand that and was joking about north west but was only as an example. Thing is though, being a forum meet i beleive everyone should be given the oportunity to meet up and play together. Am sure with enough notice the majority of people should be able to swing it with HID. Hell if it was a whole weekend i would even bring her with me. (she could caddy)

I would not object to travelling and getting accomodation for a night or two if need be, Obv am aware not everyone will be up for that but i think thats what we should aim at.

We could always do regional heats on a saturday, everyone out on lash in local town sat night and then finals on the sunday.

I agree it would be good for the whole forum to be in one place but I don't think it will happen. I discussed this last week with realgolferuk and we both think tying it down to one date and venue will be difficult especially now the season has started.

Everyone will have events at their own club that they consider to take priority. People will be going away on holiday etc. Just thought by making it regional it at least gets the ball rolling. If we can get a regional thing and GM sponsored final it might set up the possibility of a UK wide event later in the year or next year.

Just my opinion

Agreed TonyN, everyone should be invited. If a date and venue is set far enough in advance it gives us all an opportunity to organise travel and accomodation. I and am sure many others would be more than up for a weekends golf with other like minded golfers and maybe a pint or two.

yay.... and he's from across the pond! I guess we wont know till we try.

Come on GM, step in anytime soon with some music to our ears!

Hey maybe we could all pop to GM Office and hang around all day, testing all there gear, drinking all the tea and helping put the mag together in between rounds!!!

I'd be happy to participate locally but cannot see me going to a national event.

1) On a very tight budget with no spare cash for long weekends golfing
2) HID isn't particularly well and will take a long time to get better so cannot justify beingaway from her
3) I can't drink or eat spicy food so the idea of going on a night on lash (with the inevitable curry stop at the end of the night) doesn't appeal

Sorry if that makes me seem a party pooper or fixated in my opinion that a localised event is best. I am just being realistic and pointing out potential problems. I'm sure there are others out there that would love to meet up for a huge GM forum get together but have equally valid reasons why it won't happen
