• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

The best 3 courses you've EVER played?

Another in agreement about The Belfry....... didnt rate it one bit.
I'd rather play my own course than go back.

Not sure I can pick a "Best 3', but San Lorenzo in Portugal would be up there....
and I'll be playing The Datai Course in a couple of weeks.......which may well feature I hope........

I have played The Datai. Nice course, not too difficult, but watch out for the monkeys. They will nick anything that isn't nailed down to your cart.

San Lorenzo is nice enough, although not in great condition in recent years, but Monte Rei is a much better course. I played both in the same week in June and was slightly disappointed with some of the filler holes at SL which I thought were rather unremarkable.

Trallee - much too expensive nowadays though
Wild Coast Sun - simply stunning
Carnoustie - challenging and no dull holes

For me it has to be:

Doonbeg
Dromoland Castle
Berkshire

The Berkshire very nearly made it into 3rd spot for me too. Lovely courses although I prefer the "blue" (not a lover of par 3's!!).
Beau Desert was also in the reckoning. I think this is one of the nicest courses I have played and would really love to go back there at sometime.

Haven't played too many courses, only played 2 outside my own county, so mine are:

Letterkenny (Co. Donegal)
Narin & Portnoo (Co. Donegal)
Strandhill (Co. Sligo)

I've not played too many big name courses, but my fav's to date are:

1 - Forest of Arden (Arden)
2 - Celtic Manor (Monty)
3 - Belfry (Brab')

I'm still to play a Links course and was hoping to go on the GM outing but can't make the dates. But I will play one soon.

I've got my eye on a weekend at Seacroft, my mum's uncle (he got me into my 1st club, was a member there years ago and reved about it. Anyone played it, got any thoughts, etc?

1. Turnberry - Ailsa
2. Emirates GC Dubai - Majalis (home of the Desert Classic)
3. Montrose - Medal

Honourable mentions for The Old Course, Woodhall Spa, Carya (Turkey) and Royal Cape GC (Capetown).

Royal Harare (Zimbabwe) - Excellent hospitality
Hawkstone Park (Shropshire)- Two excellent courses
Clovelly (Cape Town)- Just love the setting

Fulford & San Lorenzo also worth a mention especially for the excellent greens.

Difficult as I have played a few good ones. Also difficult to compare links to other courses as they are so different. Almost needs two lists, one for links the other for non-links.

Links first:

1. Macrihanish
2. Muirfield
3. Hillside

Non-Links

1. Sunningdale Old
2. Hankley Common
3. St Georges Hill

On a different day, I could subsitute one of the links for Turnberry, Birkdale, Saunton, Troon or Royal St Georges.

Similarly hard to leave out West Sussex, The Berkshire or Hollinwell.

Also, am playing Loch Lomond next year so that may come into the reckoning.
