I going to replace my callaway irons in the new year with Taylor Made burner plus.

Now my question is, has anyone used the Belfry custom fitting center? If so was it worth while? Its £50 quid to be custom fitted, but that's knocked off the price if you buy your clubs from there. But my main concern is not so much the 50 quid or the 380 mile round trip, but are the fitters top notch?

I had my callys custom fitted at chessington, and although the fitting center and the equipment used was first class. In hindsight I don't think the fitter asked enough questions or gave me enough options.

Your thoughts please.

Was that because Cally don't offer enough options though?

No I don't think it was that murph. They did have plenty of options there, I've never seen so many six irons in my life. Maybe it was me not asking enough questions, but I just felt he gave in to what I wanted to easily and didn't question any of my requests (Graphite and club selection). I just felt in hindsight it wasn't as thourough as it should have been. Maybe I was expecting to much....who no's

That's why I'm after other peoples experiences.

On a tangent here but where did they do it? Was it in the office or one of the near drving ranges?

Callaway have their own custom fitting center at their headquaters in Chessington. Its a huge room with a screen on one wall with a golf hole on it. But it's the camera and computor technology that's the business. The balls are all marked up with crosses, and when you strike the ball the camera takes x amount of photographs over the first couple of feet of ball travel, then the computor looks at these photo's works out ball speed, spin etc then gives you the shot analysis......it's all clever stuff and very high tech.

Thing is, I suppose, that if you drive the session, giving the impression you know what you want, they are going to try to work within your specification. They are only trying to please the customer after all.

I went to Titleist, and got fitted for a set of ZBs. This wasn't because they were the best for me necessarily, but because that is what I asked for. I am sure if they had had a more open brief, a set of AP2s or AP1s would now be in my bag, but that wasn't what I wanted, so they didn't push it.

You can't really blame Cally for giving you what you asked for.

I'm not blaming them Murph, maybe I was a bit nieve about the whole custom fit thing..Maybe I should have given them a blank canvas..thats why I'm asking the question now.

If you don't feel driven to a particular club, then give it a go and see what they come up with. Go in with an open mind. I can't do this, as to a huge extent I am driven by looks. Trouble is, I design stuff for a living, so looks are important to me.

After all, if on the day you don't like the direction it is going, then you can always drive it in another direction.

What h/cap do you play off?

I play off 16 thats why I'm thinking of the TM burner plus. All the reports I've seen say they are so easy to hit and very forgiving........I need all the help I can get.

Twiregolf,

If you are looking at TM can I point you towards the Tour Burner. Slightly smaller face and thinner top line but with good forgiveness.

My advice would be to go with an open mind. If you are asked what you are looking to try just say you haven't really got a make/model in mind and so you'd be interested in trying as much as possible. At the end of the day it is your money so make sure you get the service you want.

It's probably the open mind that I didn't have at the cally fitting. Lets just hope I've learned my lesson.

I do swing towards TM though....ever since I brought my superquad i've been impressed with TM

I was custom fit at the Belfry and can highly recommend it.
The fitter was Jon something or other and has appeared in regular tests for various magazines. He was very knowledgeable and listened to what I wanted from it. He did ask me if I had any preferences of manufacturers as there were that many options it would have taken all day to go through them. I told him that I had an open mind but didn't want Calloways. I ended up with........ Calloways :D They were the best club for me at the time. It was worth £50 just for the experience.

I have since been to mizuno for CF and the pro was equally knowledgeable (see Tony N's post, same pro) the experience was just as good and I absolutely love the clubs.

I've been fitted there for my irons, woods, driver and putter (all on seperate occasions).

I also have lessons there.

Personally, I was very happy there and that's the best recommendation I can give!

When trying drivers I hit 6 different clubs and then various shafts, lofts etc.

I would suggest you take all your current clubs to give good comparisons.

Hope you get the clubs you want!!

What dont you like about your irons?

Nothing wrong with them at all htl, I just fancy a change. I've hit a few of the new TM irons and like the feel of them. I think i've mentioned before, I like what TM are producing now, IMO they have not only caught the pack up, but are now passing them.
