No this is not a final message before I trek off to Thermopolae with 299 of my Spartan brothers, so those looking for tales of a Persian massacre I'm afraid you must look elsewhere...

Hit a drive today on our 5th hole which is pretty long 580ish yards and hit an absolute beauty. Right out of the screws, penetrating flight, beautiful soft draw, a veritable gale behind me, a good bounce (especially as we'd had a bit of rain) and that extra little bit of oomph you give a drive when your timing's good.

Walking down the fairway and I can't see it and starting to fear it might be one of those vanished in the middle of the fairway jobs when quite some way in the distance I spy a little ball like speck in the middle of the fairway. It can't have gone that far surely...? But low and behold it is my ball and I start to get a little bit excited that perhaps I've finally joined the 300 yard club. Palms a little sweaty, breathing a touch erratic I wait for my GPS to settle and push the measure button.

After what seems like an eternity my numbers appear in the top right corner. The first digit brings instant disappointment 2. So literally just hit my Sunday best and still nowhere near the likes of Swinger, Pieman, JustOne et al.

For the record it was 295 but the most important fact is that I missed the green short with a fat wedge (Pelz clockface is pointless if you have a poor strike), hit a rubbish chip and two putted for a bogey. What. A. Knob! ;)

Whist the hell sort of write up are we going to get if you manage anywhere near the forum average with a driver?

Unlucky though!

Get out there again today - you'll be able to drive the green with this wind behind you!!

Thought I got close last week to the magic 300, but it was only 286. That was a half decent strike with wind behind me but uphill.

I'll need to go out on a windy day and find myself a downhill fairway!

Maybe next time...

I guess we have our answer to the other recent thread now as its certainly a catchier name than.... The 274.32 club :D

I remember when I got my S3 and I wanted my first official measured 300 yard drive. I hit a belter down a par 5 and thought that has to be... No joke it measured 299 yards, I was gobsmacked. I'd rather it had been 10 yards short not 1. I got my own back a few rounds after with my season best 312 yarder. I did hit the back of a 320yard green with the wind behind me but I didn't S3 it so to me its a no counter. I would of measured it but the green was raised so I couldn't see and I didn't think it had gone as far as it did.

Tiger, get yourself out onto a links course, you can hit IRONS 300 yards downwind :D

haha, fair enough Gordon. I was flattered that I got you that worried early on in the game that you needed to resort to such measures! Not that you needed any help! Still need to re arrange a return at some point too mate.

So Wiltshire fancy a rematch against the undefeated forum county champions Dorset? Bring it on :D

Nick, Dazza.....get your clubs dusted off!!

David Howell is not a short hitter amongst his peers.

I noted that his average driving distance for his last tournament was 285 yards.

Some folk live in dreamland when it comes to driving distances.
They hit one 250 yards [320 forum] but their average for the round is probably nearer 170 yards. [not including the OOB's and lost balls]

There's always one who puts a downer on things............:ears: ;)

DFT you're right though - it's better to hit the ball 250 yards and be on the short stuff than 300+ and be in a bit of trouble. Course management is more important than distance. Just a shame that I had neither the last time I played! :(
