Ok, so I haven't played a full round for about 14 years. That's no problem, last year I played 4 or 5, 9 hole rounds, and this year I think I've managed 3 more, normally hitting about 48-50 for 9 holes. So no excuses there.

Ok, so I've put a fair amount of good practise time in this year. My backswing is as good as it ever has been, but there is so much more to a swing than that.

Ok so I can't putt for toffee. Or beer, or anything tbh.

Ok, so I've never played this course before. Wellshurst in Hellingly, if anyone has ever tried it.

Ok, so it's a short course. Only 5600 off the yellows.

Ok, so another solo player caught up with me after 11 holes, so we paired up.

So with such low expectation, why should I quit ?

Coz I wanted to see how far I've come this year, I went out with the attitude of playing it as a totally serious round. Putting out, playing proper provisionals, only playing one ball. The lot.

And I only went and hit a bloody 83 !!

I couldn't do that when I used to play every week, and was a club member !!!

It can only get worse from here. I've peaked. I'll never be able to do that again. It can only go one way. Downhill. Rapidly. :(

I could bore you with the details, but the highlight was a birdie on the short par 5 16th. Then I immediately forgot the gameplan and smashed a driver OOB on the short par 4 17th - Stroke index 18 ffs, for a 7. The only 7 on the card. Apart from the birdie, there were 7 pars as well.

Joke.

I seriously don't believe it.

I'd like to thank my parents, Nick, the guy I joined up with today, for his local knowledge. And everyone who knows me.

And especially I'd like to thank Jammydodger.

Without him I wouldn't even have got out on the course this year at all.

The man is an absolute diamond. ( sorry if that's too slushy and emabarrassing :D )

Now get yourself on a 'proper' course, and use the whites next time. (My smilies aren't working again!) Anyway, it's a wink!!

Just the thought of going out again scares the pants off me, coz I know I'll have EXPECTATIONS.....

And we all know what that means :(

But if I give it long enough, and try to imagine this was just a nice dream ( I'll try to include Keira Knightley in there somewhere ) then another round might not get me slashing my wrists.

Stupid game. I don't want to play terribly, but don't want to play too good either.

But anyway. When I first came here, Smiffy was daft enough to invite me down to his place - he's been remarkably quiet since then, though ( Sensible man ;) )

Ha! You can't quit until you break 80. Perhaps find a course shorter than 5600y (is there such a thing?????)
Good shooting. Next time... try and keep the ball in play <wink>

Regards....

I guarantee you'll be back. That voice in your head will egg you on promising you that it can be done and so eventually you'll crack and go out again. Will you do it? Maybe, maybe not but it'll be fun trying

The thing is you may beat that score. You may not but how do you know if you don't come back for more. Do you play video games? Do you not play them anymore once you get a decent score?

Get back out on the course Man!

Break that 80 and stop yer whinin'!!!!!! :D

Yeah, I know I will.

But not tomorrow.

It was my immediate reaction that amazed me. I didn't get that warm feeling I used to get after a good round. It was definately a feeling or fear of failure.

Looking at my card after a couple of hours, I make it 33 putts, with no 3 putts. I don't do 3puttless rounds.

TBH if I can learn to drive, then there genuinely might be some hope for me in the future.

I stopped playing video games after Donkey Kong :o

Blimey Craphacker, I've never heard of anybody wanting to give up after shooting an 83!!! Come on man, you can't stop now, just remember all the good shots, especially the birdie on the 16th. For a high handicapper to even get a par there is good going.
I've played Wellshurst a lot in the past and yes it's a short course, but even a short hole on any course, position is paramount.

Like you I'm a high handicapper too and haven't shot below 100 for most of this year :( It's really annoying at the time getting 7-8 and 9's but know I can hit good shots, just not consistently enough.

So come on Craphacker, us high 'uns have got to stick together. :D :D

Golfmmad.

Of course I don't really want to give up, but I know that for the next couple of months at least I'm only going to get those frustrated feelings of 'should do better'.

I'd have felt more positive with a 93, coz at least then I know I've still got a chance to keep showing improvement.

I only got the birdie, coz the guy I was playing with knew the course, and where the pond was, so he told me to play just short of the 100 yard marker, and leave an easy 3/4 9I rather than just going for it ( like I would have normally ) and ended up in the moist stuff.

If you scored that well around that dungheap known as Wellshurt, imagine what you could shoot around a decent track. .... :D :D :D :D
Get yer arse along to East Sussex National!
Or come along to Chartham Park with us on the 25th...

Well done , lovely score first time out.

Keep up the good work , all the practice is working well.

I wonder if a few more of us could do with a few weeks away from playing and just put the hours in on the practice range instead. Would we be able to come straight back out and play well ?

Really chuffed for you craphacker :)

I always feel a bit down after a great round. It is like you know the next time out won't be as good, so there is no great desire to play anytime soon.

I'm the exact opposite! lol

If I have a cracking round I cant wait to get out again as I have the mindset that if I can do that good, I can do better!

However, history tells me that an absolute disaster normally follows a cracking round....it doesnt stop me believing though.

Oh yes, the Park Golf Course at Avington is 9 holes, but even if you played 27 you'd only just break 5600 yards! It's 3808 for 18. ;-)
