Last night me and my 2 friends played Selsdon Park Hotel in Surrey on a twilight game. After reading a tip on here of not counting points on the front nine I just played each hole as it come. Inside I knew the score card was awesome, but just playing each hole without adding points up is a absolute good send and now my new playing method!

Front 9 = 22 Points,
Back 9 = 21 Points

Blobs - NONE

1 Pointers x 3
2 Pointers x 8
3 Pointers x 4
4 pointers x 3

Highlights:

Birdie 2nd Par 4 Stroke Index 1
Birdie 5th Par 5 Stroke Index 5
Birdie 13th Par 4 Stroke Index 16
Almost driving the 18th (281 yard dog leg)

Bad Moments:

15th Par 5 Stroke index 6 – Lipped birdie put
16th Par 4 Stroke index 8 – Lipped birdie put

today im on cloud 9....... :D :D :D :D

You clearly played well for you but why bother with stableford scoring at all? Why not just count the gross shots i.e. real golf without the disguise of handicaps before telling us all how great you played?

43 pts sounds brilliant but 83 gross ain't that great really. You should be a politician.

65 would be brilliant as you say but only as a gross score.

Sorry for the -ve sounding post and I'm probabaly going to get plenty stick for it but I so wish people would just tell us how many shots they took, actual hits of the ball. Nett scores don't mean anything really. It has nothing to do with being a low or high handicapper either, if you took 95 say 95 and if you took 68 say 68 etc etc. :p

Why bother with handicaps at all then, if we're all going to be judged off scratch.

ok birdieman, i was +10 from scratch score on a par 73 course. I hit the ball 83 times, cleaned it around 5 times, and i kept it in my pocket between holes. is that better.

My apologies if it was a formal qualifying competition. I understood it to be just a bounce game between friends.

Of course handicaps are relevant in competition play to us all but when referring to an evening knock is it not easier to just say I shot 83?

The stableford might have been relevant to the three of you but to us forummers I for one would much have preferred just to know your gross score. You could have then mentioned that's a nett whatever but your handicap isn't even mentioned in the post other than in the signature so the 43 points didn't mean a lot to us that don't know how you play.

This probably sounds a bit needless but I'm just trying to clarify. When I was a youngster we had it drummed into us by teachers to give your gross score when anyone asks what you shot. Nett or in this case nett stableford doesn't really tell someone who doesn't know your game anything much.

Climbs down off high horse.... :o

I'd say it was the other way around. Gross score doesn't tell me anything if I don't know the player. But saying I scored 43 points tells me he had a good round and played under his handicap..The same as if he said I had a net 63.

Gross 85 is not too good for a Cat 1 player, but a Cat 4 player it's a great round.

Sorry BM, have to disagree here mate.
I know exactly what your saying but...
Surely 43 points no matter what your handicap is good playing relative to your h/cap, be it 4 or 24.
If someone you didn't know came up to you and said they shot 85 gross, would you feel sorry for them or congratulate them? Exactly. You wouldn't know.
If it was your score I'm guessing you wouldn't be happy whereas someone like Smiffy would probably be over the moon. ;)
You read on here all the time about people reaching their goals whether its to reach Cat I or breaking 100, 90,80 etc and you can almost here them smile. I think the least we should do is congratulate and encourage the happy people who cant stop grinning and just want to share their good news. :)

Well done on your score Oddsocks , glad you had a nice evening.

I for one would also like to see people put their handicaps in when telling us what score theyve shot. I dont have the signatures showing (cos of all the bleedin photos and general cr@p in them) so I always find myself wondering what peeps are playing off.
