Hiya,
Last week many of you kindly gave me lots of advice regarding my problems playing Matchplay. Basically I was losing against my mate on the last 3 holes week in, week out. Well, we played yesterday, and my head was full of strategies and plans etc etc.
We played for the 1st time with full handicap difference, as we had been playing with 3/4 difference, and boy, did I need those extra 3 strokes!! He came out really focused, and only dropped 3 strokes on the first nine!
I won't bore you with the details, but anyway, I arrived on the 16th tee,2 holes down!! So the prospect of having to win at least 2 of the 3 holes I really dread was slightly ominous to say the least. A quick fag, a slug of lucozade, and a few deep breaths helped me think straight and recall all the advice you guys had given me.
I got a scrappy half on 16, so had to win 17 and 18. Only difference this time was that I got a shot up both of them. Well the pressure must have got to my partner, as he promptly put his tee shot in the water - a sight I had never seen before!! I played up short (unintentionly) and won the hole. So, a win up 18 was needed. Big difference was that I was playing first, and I don't know if it was an adreneline rush, but I drove some 20 yards past my normal spot, leaving just a wedge to the green!! On the green, I left a long downhiller woefully 6ft short, so he had his 20ft put for the match. It was in all the way, but came to rest on the lip, amazingly, so I now had a downhill left to righter for the hole - and yes I only bl**dy holed it!! So the match was halved and we were both really chuffed with the outcome. On any previous day, when he was playing that well, I would have lost big time, but I didn't, and I just can't wait to play again - shame it won't be for about a month!!! (We've got some stableford comps coming up, so I might have to start a thread for help with THAT format soon!!)
Thanks again guys :D

PS. I am not a magazine reader, but apparantly Goodwood was featured in one of the monthly mags this month, with a photo of our refreshment Gazebo (not hut!!). You get a mean bacon buttie there, but then again, half way through a game of golf, any bacon buttie tastes great!!

well done...

now that you've tied with him, the next step is to keep the pressure on and go on and beat him.

Your golf can only get better from it as well so keep it up and watch your own handicap come down :)

Thanks Slugger.
Yes, that first win will be sweet, but unfortunately we probably won't be playing that often for a while now.
It's strange though, how even after just one round with a different mindset, I feel a lot more confident, which can only be a positive!!
And they say football is a funny old game!!

Great news. Keep it going. I played the old Goodwood a good few years back before all the changes as my club had an inter-club match for the Dukes Antlers (unsurprisingly a mounted set of antlers) alledgedy shot by the Duke himself on the estate.

Hehe.... and this is the way the memories are written. Congrats and more next time!

good for you now you have done that he will look at different light next time you play,so get at him from the start

well done again and good luck for next time

let us know how you get on

The pressure will be on him from the start next time as well, because now he knows you're not going to crumble.

I think having closer games will improve your own game too.
