Played in an open at Belton Park as GB72's guest in a Invitation Day today.
Greg and I shared the front 9 holes together and played off each other very well, when one of us faulted, the other dovetailed and came in with the points. Our front 9 tally was 19 points off 3/4 handicap, Greg coming in with 3 gross pars, I came in on 4 of the other holes with Greg making up the difference in nett pars. It could have been so much better as we both threw some shots away.
I had a very strong back 9 coming in on 6 of them and personally scoring 18 points off 3/4 handicap for the whole back 9, so was very pleased, Greg again came in when he needed to on the other 2 holes with another gross par and nett par to give us another 19 points on the back and that was with a blob!
So a total of 38 points with a blob on what I thought was a testing course at times where you had to be accurate off the tee, and it wasn't just about getting your driver out and booming one, there were some quirky doglegs and strategically placed fairway bunkers and large tree's in the fairways which you had to fade or draw around. A par 3 saw all our 4 ball blob with two of us finding the water!
After reviewing my card I would have had 35 points with 2 blobs off full handicap so, at a strange course which had many various hazards and blind greens, I'm relatively pleased.
40 points was the lowest prize with 44 taking top prize, so, we were close, but no cigar.
The setting is really beautiful at Belton Park with Deer running freely all over the course, the wispy grass just to the sides of the fairways is penal and you have to take your medicine, green-side bunkers are very deep but consistent, the greens were excellent and were fast & true, there is some nice water and genuinely its a very well kept and natural looking golf course, it is definitely a course I will return to.
I'd like to thank Greg for his hospitality and invite to his club, I have donated the £35.00 it cost to Help for Heroes tonight. I'd also like to congratulate Belton Park on a well organised and professionally run competition and a huge  to the catering staff as the Carvery afterwards was excellent.
I'm now waiting for the postman to deliver a fine (only hopefully) as I didn't notice a speed camera until it flashed and I was going....rather fast
