Attacks on westerners is on the increase and becoming more and more violent in recent years in Thailand, will we be restricted or so cautious that we stop going to such countries soon that have relied on tourism for so many years as, although in small minorities, gangs prey on westerners and brutally attack them, or worse, murder them!

It's easy to say it's only a minority and in percentage terms it's very limited, but would you want this to happen to anyone of any age, never mind pensioners?

There is a huge crowd watching this brutal assault and yet it's only another single westerner who gets beaten up for his troubles in trying to intervene, and as such, nobody stops it!

Cornwall it is then....

We've stopped going there, along with Egypt, Morroco and even to the smaller islands of eastern Greece. Too cautious? Probably, but I'd rather feel comfortable and secure on holiday.

As a gay female couple, there are many countries that we wouldn't even consider visiting. Mainly those with a religion problem. The world would be a much better place without it.....

Whilst things like this are horrific, the risk of attack isn't significantly higher than any other country in the world, especially if out in crowded areas after a few drinks. Thailand relies heavily on tourism and last year nearly 30 million people visited with westerners accounting for a significant proportion of those travellers.

I won't be crossing it off the list just yet.

This was done by a small group of drunken morons who could have been any nationality, anywhere in the world.

I've spent a lot of time in Thailand, the Thais will be pretty horrified about this.

If you take the time to read the whole article, the attacks on westerners is increasing year on year in Thailand and is becoming an issue, and, if the Thai's would be that horrified about this, why didn't any of them amongst the very large crowd on all sides of the street watching the whole attack unfold step forward in numbers and stop the small (4) drunken morons?

Probably for the same reason that very few in this country are prepared to intervene.

Fear, self-preservation; call it what you will it is the same everywhere.

By Brother in Law has live in Bangkok for many a year - as a local more than an ex-pat - he reckons Thai men 'hate' westerner blokes as they are seen to be in Thailand for one reason only - and it's not golf - and it's not sightseeing (of the traditional sort). He often finds local men spitting on the ground 'at' him when he is out with his partner (a Thai girl)

If you look hard enough, you will find statistics to never leave your house again. We are going to Thailand next year with the family and are really looking forward to it - scaremongering will always happen, you just have to avoid unnecessary risks.

do you see this video as scaremongering?

I would be cautious at 2am in any city.

How is this report "scaremongering", I'd say it was more about bringing awareness to what is potentially out there at certain times in a foreign country even if you have your wits about you! A couple in their 60's and there son not only get punched to the ground but then kicked unconscious whilst on the floor, and as the report goes on to say, violence against westerners has increased, that's important news, especially if planning a trip to that area, it's far from scaremongering!

Totally agree Robin, obviously you can find trouble anywhere in the world, but when unprovoked attacks on pensioners are happening the right thing to do is raise awareness.
The USA government have warned their people to be cautious in Europe, not broken it down by country just Europe.
Enjoy your holidays were ever you go, but beware, I'm sure lot's of people believe it'll never happen to them.

Having been to Thailand - definitely for golf and I took my wife with me - and speaking with several Thai women (all of the caddies are women) the overwhelming view of Thai men is that as husbands they're pretty lazy and treat their wives like crap. A generalisation I know but we were told this several times by different women in different regions of Thailand. Assuming there's some truth in it then it's not surprising that some Thai men have a poor view of western men.

As for the attack, it's pretty disgusting and unjustifiable but it won't have me crossing Thailand off my possible destination list. I like to think I'm a pretty savvy traveller and don't often find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time. 2am is bedtime wherever I am in the world.

Where is the evidence for this increase the report mentions???? No evidence = scaremongering!!!

A quick look on the FCO website suggests it isn't the safest place to visit. Several areas should be avoided for all but essential travel. Bangkok is also listed as on a high level threat of terrorism.

"Violent sexual assaults and unprovoked violence have been reported in tourist areas."

I'll stick with the advice from the foreign office.

So you won't be going to Spain either?

What a despicable and cowardly attack. A shame there wasn't anyone around that could have give them a good kicking back. I hope they get severely punished for that - disgusting.

suggest you compare the difference between Spain and Thailand on the FCO website. There's a hell of a difference between almost trouble free and rare occurrences and what you'll read about Thailand. But hey, you obviously know best.
