Had a Thai curry last night which was great but very hot.

Played today with a regular opponent in a bounce game, match play. We play on a regular basis, once a fortnight, good friend and it is a very competitive game.

At the 3rd hole I was caught short and had to find the loo and we did not complete the hole for obvious reasons. The course was full and was not possible to let other groups through.

He claimed the match by one hole, took the money, and said he had won by default which we both knew.

The question is, being a friendly, was he correct in claiming victory?

I had to rush off and did not play the hole for obvious reasons. He may have played the hole but do you feel it was within the spirit of the game being a 'friendly'.

Well that's up to you and your mate - technically he is right and there is no "written rule" to cover the spirit etc

Well he could have agreed to have called it void and a half but he doesn't have to. As it was only a friendly does it really matter at the end of the day? Surely not worth worrying about and falling out over?

There was no falling out and I am not worried at all.I paid him the money end of story.

What I am asking is whether you would have claimed the hole. I fully realise he did nothing wrong.

You're changing your question.

It's just a friendly, everyone might answer differently and there's no real answer in a friendly.

Personally if I was playing for money with a good friend, yeah I'd definitely claim the hole, as much for banter as any other reason.
You said it's competitive.

Three

I am not changing the question. Originally I said claiming victory and then claiming the hole. They are both the same as he won by one hole of have I missed something.

Appreciate all your comments but my point was how different is it in a friendly and to reiterate he must have thought twice as he claimed it was a hollow victory of words to that affect

You are changing the question..

Originally you asked "was he correct in claiming victory?"
And now you've changed it to "what would you have done?"

Anyway, those questions should be irrelevant. If you want to know what was the "right thing" the only right thing was that you should concede the hole if you are unable to play it. The onus shouldn't be on the opposition to be judged on whether they claim it or not.

I don't think I'd take money off a mate in a friendly game if there was only one in it after 3 holes and had to be abandoned. Each to their own and all that

what was meant by winning by default? That to me suggests he thinks you withdew!

As for the hole in question, I guess its a sore point now?

What's that expression?

Oh yeah....... **** happens

You said yourself its 'very competitive'

I'm guessing when you couldn't complete the hole you conceded it to him, no different to any other hole except the reason you conceded

Whether he'd offer a half or take the hole boils down to what you two term as 'very competitive'

I'd claim the hole, and the money for the banter. And I'd buy loo roll with the money, and present it on the first tee next time out.

I've just bought a Thai Curry from Sainsbury's, I'm now worried for my partners and early tee time tomorrow
