I am playing in a Texas Scramble in a couple of weeks and I haven't got a clue what it is!!! Help me??

You will be in a team of three. Everyone plays a shot and a decision is taken on the best position for the next and everyone plays from there. This continues until the ball in in the hole.
Makes life easy you might think but each member has to make his tee shot count a certain number of times before the end of the round.

Always teams of 4 up here, never heard of 3 in a texas? Usually each team member plays 3 tee shots minimum. Great format- you're basically never in the rough and bag a hatful of birdies.

It's good and usually friendly game though and even on your home course you visit parts of the course that you don't normally. ie You may be in the same team as someone who drives it 50 yards longer or shorter than you would normally.

Important note here is if you are 1st to putt and it stops at the side of the hole ..'DO NOT TAP IT IN, JUST MARK IT COS IF YOU KNOCK IT IN IT COUNTS AND YOUR TEAM CAN'T GO FOR THE PUTT'

So, when on the fairway, do you drop or place? I assume you place on the green. Looking fwd to playing from the short stuff most of the time, a rarity for me!!!

When you have selected the ball in play, it is usual to place a marker, (usually a tee peg) within 6" and then the player who played that ball, plays the next shot. Following players, place their balls within 6" of the marker and play their shots. Again the team selects the best ball position, and the game continues from there in a similar way.
It's a very nice friendly game, where, as in golf generally, everyone is placed on his/her honour to act fairly.
Madandra makes a crucial point about putting. The first ball in the hole is the one that counts, so if you lag a putt close to the hole, don't be tempted to knock it in if other members of the team can better the score.

I dont mind playing TS, partner games etc but I always feel on a saturday that im missing out on my own game of golf.

I agree Brendy, alot of other's aswell like their own game on a Saturday. Keep the scrambles for Sundays.

I played this format a few times. Really good fun! If you are not first to play, it means you can try a few shots you would not normally play. Be aware of Madandra's point. I fell foul of this one - I was not popular!

In most Texas Scrambles you see the 3 playing partners hunkered down behind the line of their first team member's putt while he's making a stroke to read the line. This would be a 2 stroke penalty. Most players don't know about this rule in my experience.

But you are allowed to move across and follow the line of the putt once he's hit it - I think!

I'm with you on this...shows you how often I play a scramble. In saying that, it's still easy to get a good idea without being inline.

J_F the way 14-2 reads to me, the person getting assistance is the player on strike, hence the two-shot penalty.
It has to be that as he couldn't give assistance to his caddy. Therefore the penalty in a Texas would presumably go to the player on strike leaving the rest to benefit unscathed.

I see what you mean, viscount, but since the players are a team and there's only one score being counted in Texas Scramble it has to be the team score which attracts the 2 shot penalty.
