Had a game then a conversation with group of lads at weekend , good honest bunch,
One took wrong drop at a water hazzard so i just mentioned what to do correctly & it was appreciated ,

we then came across an incident ,

i had chipped stone dead on the 8th and one of them just off the green commented , "stay off the green " i said what ? he said i cant ask for your ball to be left there so stay off the green is next best thing & they use it between them

I asked them what makes them think they can ask another player to stay off the green & not mark their ball ? i said in reality its the very same as saying please leave ur ball there, just different terminology & as far as i was concerned it would be breaking the rules ..

So am i right ??

Can you tell someone to stay off the green when in reality your telling them do not mark ur ball it might help me ?

Thanks in Advance

No they cannot and as they all know what is meant by the comment they are cheating.

What has "staying off the green" got to do with anything? Have they dreamed up some strange "Rule" about what you can or cannot do depending on where you are standing?

Rule 22-1 applies and this bit in particular:

In stroke play, if the Committee determines that competitors have agreed not to lift a ball that might assist any competitor, they are disqualified.

Which means that if this is a bizarre way of having a ball left that could assist and you agree to it, you are both liable to disqualification.

Ive seen a few similar, guy pitching on and asked a fellow player to "mind his shadow" which was exactly the same thinly veiled "please dont walk by me to mark your ball."

Answers make sense, can I put a twist on it ?
What if just as Bladeplayer was about to walk to mark his ball, can I ask him to stand still if I am ready to play?
Who would have priority?
In effect I would be wanting his ball left were it is, but he's not party to it, just being well mannered if he stops still and leaves his ball.

Rule 22-1 gives a player the right to lift his ball if he thinks it could assist another player. That right takes precedence and it wouldn't in my view be ill-mannered to insist on it.

Help a Yank out... what does that mean? Don't stand on the green? Move the ball off the green? Other? Never heard that before.

The guy is trying to cheat the comment "don't stand on the green" is said instead of "leave your ball where it is as it may assist me"which would be an obvious breach of the rules, they think they are being clever.

Cheers Colin.

Thing you don't HAVE to mark you ball. In a way its like hitting a GIR - running down to the green and mark you ball so it doesn't interfere with you partners 2nd shot.

It's wrong what he's asking though - because its your discretion if you wish to mark you're ball or not.

Not always

[h=3]22-1. Ball Assisting Play[/h]
..... if a (ie any) player considers that a ball might assist any other player, he may:

a.
Lift the ball if it is his ball; or

b.
Have any other ball lifted.

I've never experienced anyone asking me to either, leave a ball or to stay off the green, and I would accommodate either if they did

I had not really seen this until I started playing in the seniors .
They are the biggest cheats going mostly because most of them are ignorant of the rules .
one guy when I pulled him up over something bet me everything in my wallet that he was right. So I took £50 off him
he might think better of it next time.
