Would anyone else agree that one of the core "death-moves" of a handicap golfer is getting really tense and trying to kill the ball?

If you're relaxed and let the club do what it needs to do then surely you'll get much more consistent distances and shot shape, making the game more easier and giving you the basis to improve other things like the more traditional fundamentals?

Thoughts?

Wrong tension is a killer of the golf swing.

However, the correct level of tension is what makes a really good swing - which should flow.

I find that trying to hit it harder actually improves my swing - up to a point!

After that it's a lunge-y heave that can go anywhere - but mainly left as the arms correct for my over-balance!

Getting the 'traditional fundamentals' correct is the first priority!

If you grip the club like your strangling a straight it will tighten everything up and make it hard to put a good turn and athletic swing. Many golfers, myself included grip it way too hard although it's something I've tried to work on. Speed kills and if you swing hard, unless your Bubba or have the good eye/hand co-ordination a few on here have, the chances are everything is out of synch and it will go anywhere but straight

Can grip as hard as I like and swing as hard as I want along I keep down on my swing. The killer for me is turning out early. Keep my chest down, cover the ball and I can give it a rip. When the driver is not behaving this is exactly what I'll do. I can out stripe my driver with my 5 wood ( which is just wrong!)

Softening up my grip and loosening up my right elbow was the cause of the biggest improvement in my golf game.

A tip I was given that seems to work is as you set up squeeze the grip hard then relax. this releases the tension in your hands and lightens your grip on the club.
