:rant:C'mon ref, please can a stance be made about the ridiculous screaming and grunting when players hit the ball. Just what is it all about? Is it an effort to put the opponent off? It didn't used to be there, and it isn't there in the vast majority of other hitting sports... imagine Tiger on the 1st tee doing that, or 120 players doing that on every full shot. You'd need ear defenders to play and spectate!!:sbox:

Breathe in 2,3,4, and relax...

I think something definately needs to be done about it. The Sharopova match yesterday was just ridiculous, she was still making the noise by the time her opponent was returning the ball and the opponent who eventually beat her was just as bad.

Its just got to be an attempt to put the opponent off, the way the noise/ grunt was being strung out. Total gamesmanship IMO.

I reckon the 1st lady to grunt will be Laura Davies, although I'd like to see & hear some of the younger fitter ladies grunt but for alternative reasons

Completely with you on that. It's absurd, ugly, destructive of enjoyment and should be ruled out of the game.

I remember Clive James's fanciful explanation of the purpose of the Connors grunt (one of the earlier exponents of the art). Because, he explained, sound travels faster even than a Connors serve, the grunt would arrive ahead of the ball and fool the opponent into trying to hit the grunt instead of the ball.

Funny at the time, but it's way out of control now.

I caught the highlights of Sharapova being knocked out and the noise was unbelievable. She gets louder every year and its gone too far, im glad shes out for the sake of peoples eardrums. Women scream less having a baby :D

It was funny for about 5 seconds when players first started doing it but now its just stupid.

It's not s bad as the impression sensitive microphones, there to pick up the sound of ball on racquet, give.

There was an attempt to moderate it in general and there have been on-court attempts, but to no avail.

It's actually taught in some 'schools' as a way to hit it harder/better - but supposedly not as gamemanship.

Many opponents are actually immune to it or claim not to hear it. Not sure whether hat's actually true as Sharapova's has been compared to the level of a chainsaw!

I've always been told that due to the relative speed of the women's game, they need to use skills such a spin and fake shots more. They then use the scream/grunting to cover up the sound the ball is making as it leaves the raquet, so that the opponent can't tell what they have done just from the sound.

Not sure how true this is mind, but it makes sense in my head!

its exhaling (grunting) as you hit the ball , boxers do it as they punch aswell , (exhale that is, not scream) its to generate power ..

Sharapova match yesterday was ridiculous tho

P.S see when you get to a certain age you make these noises just getting out a chair.............allegedly
