I've just got my temporary handicap of 28  so i can now work towards getting it down by the end of the summer, I would like to be around 23-24, do you think that's possible?

Phil.

You've got some scoring to do if you're going to get to 23. Its not out of the question but is obviously dependent on how well you play. If you're a "genuine" 28'er then it might be difficult but if you're a "20-in-waiting" then play as many qualifiers as you can and if you score well the computer will do the business for you.

Hi

Of course it is possible, hard work, dont let the bad days get you down and also a course of lessons with a pro. I find targetting certain holes in a round also helps...i.e. try to play the par 3s in level par, getting upand down from the edge of the green can save dozens of shots

good luck....but enjoy it!

At 28 your a cat 4 player, so just shoot 2-3 under handicap, half a dozen times and your there. But having not seen you play golf, the question "is it possible" I haven't got a clue.

My pro has often said that i am one to watch out for and that i am hitting the ball well, I must admit that i did get the temp on the white tees and not the yellow.

The whites are the tees you should get your handicap from.

There are a too many variables in this,
how long have you been playing, are you consistent (unlikely with a 28), how often do you play, age, fitness, temperament, etc

I was told that I had the potential to get to 18, by the Club Captain, quite early on, but that was based purely on me outdriving him! It took me 18 months to get the first cut, but that will not be true of everyone.

Yeah, but the Pro I got a couple of lessons from said with my swing I should be a single figure handicapper easily, and after getting an initial h/c of 16 it's just gone up and up! :(

What do Pros know?!

In all seriousness though, if you generally shoot less than 28 over then it won't be long before it comes down a lot.

Yes...of course, but it depends on how many comps you can play in. The first few will be disastrous, most probably, then you might find your feet.

There's BIG cuts for players off 28, but if they gave you 28, your real ability might be even higher....if you made a few 7s/8s/9s on your card....your medal rounds could well be over 28, so to get cuts you might need to tidy up bad holes, learn to play sensibly under comp conditions and then avoid disasters on rounds that are going well. It's a tough one to judge.....if you were playing way better than 28 in fun games and got 28 after official cards were reviewed, I'd say you might struggle.

I wouldn't be giving out about getting a 28 handicap if I was you, I got a 24 handicap when I joined but even after a few months of playing I'm at best a 30 - 34 handicapper. As I'm now playing off 25 I haven't a hope of winning any competitions until I get the handicap up to 28 and/or improve a good bit.

Can definately be done. I was given 24.5 when I first started. This was in September which gave me the winter to improve. By the end of the next season I was cut to 17(49 points in a Saturday competition helped this!!!) As ManCity101 said try to work on your short game as this will help your scoring dramatically and hopefully your handicap will drop.
ps prepare for the bandit abuse if it does :)

What is a 'temporary handicap'??

I wondered that :D

Maybe someone (the h'cap sec) wants to keep his options open.

I wish I'd been given a temporary h'cap two years ago, then they could have moved it up to the right figure after my first 10 medal/stableford rounds.

How does that work Viscount??!

I would lay money on a 'temp handicap' being a totally made up measure and not being 'legal'.....either you have a handicap or you don't surely??

Again anyone wiling to point me in the right direction with this new golfing term?

dodger, I know of one course at least round my way that requires you to have a handicap to play in a qualifier and at the same time says only cards returned in a qualifier can be used for handicap purposes. catch 22 for a newbie
