Ok - so we all prefer main greens and temps are a necessary evil. Went out today and knew putting would be a lottery so left my putter behind and told my playing partners we all had to chip within a dustbin lid for a gimme. They thought I was nuts but I can't tell you how much more fun and rewarding the game was. What was interesting was how good we became and how many times we chipped in. Some of that was skill we already had (but of course!!) but also I think because we were genuinely trying to hole it. Now I know that's how we should always chip BUT there is no doubt it sharpened our chipping skills and really turned the game around from a bit of a trudge and moaning about the weather and the temps to actually relishing the challenge.

My playing partners are higher handicappers who would seldom chip in, or dream they could, and yet on the last we all hit the pin (none dropped though)!

Try it - certainly means I'll be looking forward to the next game if it has to be on temps.

All well and good but what about all the divots on the winter greens from you lot chipping on them, i bet the folk playing behind you were over the moon with the 3 footer over a ring of divots on every green;)

If you take a divot with a chip and run you've chunked it :-)

If on temps and not some winter match, I always leave the putter in the bag. If the ball is in the white circle marking the temp, drag the ball back off outside the line and have a chip.

Plus our temps aren't really "temps" at all at the moment as only 5 holes are open and they've manufactured a Par 3 course from those. I guess if you had proper temps then chipping on them isn't such a great idea - although they're so small that usually we were chipping from off the "green"!

Quite amusingly, I was out yesterday on our open front 9, and the Temp holes were full of water but the holes on the greens were dry.......and we were using the full greens.....:whoo:

No temps thankfully but I can understand the concept, and after all, enjoyment is the ultimate goal ;)
