I am really struggling at the moment to slow things down... It sounds stupid because if you know you are lashing at it you think you can just say to yourself slow down and it will work!

I have been up to the practice range and made good progress on issues that had slipped back in to my game but I cant stop swinging at the ball really hard. I was in good form a couple of weeks ago and it all just felt natural but at the moment I am struggling to slow things down.

Any suggestions for drills/things to try?

It's not possible to hit the ball hard, only fast. There's no need to slow things down, only try to swing smoother so the body and club 'swooosh' as one. You wouldn't think about tempo when swinging a broom handle,,, and you wouldn't try to swing it hard.... only fast.

Think Seve-ria-no Ball-est-er-os rather than Seve B!

It's rhythm that is most important. While that is often called 'smooth', smooth can be full of tension - which is bad! Tempo - fast, medium, slow - is simply a measure of the pace of that rhythm. Music concepts apply pretty well to golf swing.

Easier said than done hey.

Yeah makes sense guys thanks.

Might sound a silly question but would you say it should be slightly slower back than through?

I do mean slightly as I know some blokes go at 5 miles an hour back and 50 100 forward

I have the same problem in getting to quick at the top of my back swing and snatch the club. I use the drill of swinging a PW and 9 iron held together so its really heavy, this stops you from being able to snatch the club.

Sev you have hit the nail on the head... When I was in form there almost felt like a pause at the top... there wasn't it was just the point where I reached the top of my backswing and could then apply a lil bit more power instead of snatching at it.

Nice one mate, should be a pro

As just one said there is nothing wrong with a fast swing as long as its still accelerating through impact. My back swing on average is 0.90 seconds and down swing is 0.28 seconds.........stats courtesy of 3 bays gsa.

Howndocyou know about my sexual techniques ... .? ;)

I was always taught "Strawberry Sauce" for tempo. The backswing is strawberry the "S" in sauce is the start of the downswing and the hit of the ball is somewhere around the "C". If I lose my tempo I just mutter it out loud to myself as I swing.

Severiano on the backswing, using the 'B' in Ballesteros as a trigger to start the down swing and hitting the ball on 'os'

I'd agree with that except I'd be hitting the ball on the 't' in Ballasteros.

Whenever I've had the temp of my swing measured it's been about 3:1 backswing/downswing

Pick your favourite golfers swing and try and copy it.

This guy isn't too bad....

I remember when you first posted that last year Bob, its just so nice to watch...

Now this is something nobody can help with but it annoys me how shocking my memory is to forget what I was doing a week before when everything was rosy...I definitely think from what people have said on this forum I know what is missing in my swing. Looking forward to hitting the practice range in abit...

Also I have wrote in my phone a few things to think of when my swing isn't quite on and go through them like a checklist

One thing my pro suggested I do was to take my driver and try and hit it to 100 yards, then 150, then 200, then more. The way to do that was with a slow, slow, slow swing, which then got a little faster for each increase.

He argued that it would teach me what a slow swing felt like, rather than trying to feel what a less quick one did. I have to say, I now have a greater feel of when I've gone too fast. Worked for me.

But you do look a little odd on the range, swinging at 5 miles an hour to make the ball go 100 yards with a driver! ;)
