I had never actually witnessed a bunch of tees tied together until today :o

For the first time ever, I saw someone actually playing with those stupid rubber cone shaped ones on a string last weekend. Idiot.

Harsh ? Got a set for when the ground is frozen and it's impossible to put a tee in the ground

I have a set of these that used to belong to my Grandad and they must be over 50 years old. He was an exceptional (scratch) golfer and not an idiot.

I don't think I am an idiot either and would certainly play with these if the ground was frozen, even if only for the nostalgia.

I have a set of the cone ones from when I used to play a links course. We could play that course throughout winter but if the weather was cold getting a tee in was impossible. Not an issue on softer parkland courses but common to see them at links courses.

If the ground is frozen, then golf just becomes ice-hockey. Don't see the point.

Also, the amount of time other players spend looking for those rubber tees is amazing. I actually witnessed somebody take 5 minutes once. We were 200 yards away when he stopped searching.

But plenty others see the point and still find enjoyment.

Parts of the ground are frozen, others are not and quite playable. It doesn't need to be fully frozen, just very, very firm. Too firm for a tee anyway. Welcome to links golf in the North East in the winter.

Maybe that's the difference, others enjoy it but I don't. I do play in all weathers but not when the ground is frozen. I've never seen a pro event held on frozen ground.

But you do see them hold events when the links are baked and ground is solid and you see pro events halted for a little bit of wind and rain and you don't see pro events on 99% of the courses we play on. I don't think you can compare really.

It's just clicked why he had them.....they were still on winter mats which didn't have tee holes on them, you're supposed to be able to stick a wooden tee in them but in actual fact, you can't. He's been quite smart now I think about it. "Idiot" comment retracted.

With them all strung together it's easy for others to see them and not get lost

Until you snap one and have to faff around tying on a new one :)

Certainly the titchy wee lime green ones I often use for an iron off the mat snap easy - but then I don't use them too often as I don't find that many not snapped...so I normally just use a broken wooden tee I'll find lying all around the mat
