3 guys buy lunch for £10 each . total £30.. ok
Guy at till reckons he over charged them by £5 .. gives it to the waitress to divide up between the guys , Out of the £5 she gives the guys £1 each & KEEPS £2.. so the lunch now only cost the guys £9 each & she kept £2 ok? (ye still with me ?)
£9 x 3 = £27 + £2 = £29.. where did the othe £1 go :D :D :D

They have each paid £9 each. The £10 minus the pound back. From this £27 they were charged £25. £27-£25=£2 that the waitress took. Just confusing the way it has been worded. The missing pound never existed.

Or to word it another way, out of the £30 is taken £25. this is the equivilent of two paying £8.33 and one paying £8.34.Add to this the extra ponnds returned and they have actually handed over 2x£9.33 and 1x£9.34 or £28. The £2 that they were not given back the waitress kept.30-28=2
Simples

TO QUOTE MURPH .. UH??
Your bang on mate there is no other £1 . but crikey thats some answer ,, you a maths teacher or accountant or something ha .. good on ya :D :D

So let me get this straight.
Rick, Smiffy and I go for a ruby and we split the £30 bill.
£10 note in each.
The waitress brings us £1 back each so all 3 of us have spent £27. Correct?

the wairess got £5 to divide between ye , she couldnt divide it evenly so she gave ye £1 each & kept the other £2 herself... ya still wit me bob ?? so ye 3 paid £9 each & she kept £2 ... =£29. just a trick mathametical one bob ..

So as we all put in £10 each, the extra missing £1 does actually exist
I dunno anymore ... ok heres an easier one for ye guys

2 mothers & 2 daughters go shoe shopping ,, buy one pair of shoes each.. they bring home 3 pairs of shoes ??

Basically the problem you have is the formulae you use to work out the sum.

If you say £10 each makes £30. Till guy says it's only £25 gives waitress £5. She keeps £2 and hands back £3. That's still £30.

But as soon as you say they spent £10 each and got back £1 each making it £9 each then it won't add up because of the multiplication timing.

To sum up it comes down to laws of mathematics and when you can multiply/divide out and when you can't.
Plus when you tell it in the 'right way' it can be a real mind boggler and make sense to most.

So it's 'just the way you tell em' !! :)
