This afternoon saw the only remaining Team GM pairing advance to the regional final of the Volvo matchplay championship.
JJF69 and Thecraw were meant to be playing away at Haggs Castle, the original hosts of the Scottish Open however due to torrential rain of the last few days Haggs Castle was shut and the game swung in the favour of JJF69 and Thecraw when it was hastily re-arranged at Old Ranfurly.
Weather wise, I can only describe it as stinking. It was wild when we kicked off at 1500hrs and to add insult to it the rain came on. The 1st at Old Ranfurly is a tough opening left to right dog leg measuring 452 yards. I hit driver, 3 wood 4 iron. It was howling at this stage. A bogie start was good enough to secure a 1 up lead after 1. Pars at 2 & 3 saw the GM duo race into a 3 up lead, a lead that we never lost for the rest of game. A deft touch from the side of the 6th green saw JJF69 pitch in for eagle and we were 4 up. Credit to our opponents who dug in and won the 7th with a par net birdie however a JJF69 birdie at 8 and an outstanding par at the tough uphill 424 yard stroke index 1 9th saw us reach the turn 4 up.
We lost the 10th to a net par however Thecraw birdied the par 5 11th to restore the 4 up comfort zone. Holes 12, 13 & 14 were halved with regulation pars before team GM closed out the game at 15. Both JJF69 and myself were 10 feet away from the flag in two when the white flag went up and a 5&3 victory was ours.
It was a decent game and both myself and JJF played some decent golf, our better ball score through 15 was level par gross which considering the conditions was impressive stuff. An eagle and two birdies certainly helped the cause. The wind made it really difficult, especially when it was at your back as proved when JJF69 carried an 8 iron 190 yards, just 30 yards to far!
