Following on partially from "these guys deserve a special mention" I was wondering about thos forum members who have lessons and their pupil/teacher relationship (please so innuendo!!)

I have been with my teaching pro for 8 months during which time he has remodelled my swing from a very upright one with lots of reverse pivot into a flatter more rounded one. My handicap has dropped from 20 to 14 and my game continues to improve.

Although not the cheapest teaching pro in the area I have an excellent working relationship. He teaches in a simple clear manner relying more on swing feel than swing thoughts or worrying that my wrist cock is 32 degrees at the top of my swing etc.

He is moving out of the area (from 5 minutes from my house to a journey two junctions down the M4 some 30 minutes away) but I am going to make the effort as I don't want to break the continuity I have built up. It is not out of some displaced loyalty but as a result of the significant, continuing improvement I have seen. His new facility has a 30 yard short game area (from grass) which we are going to utilise in a bid to get my scoring really firing.

I think this is quite an interesting thread and would perhaps make an intersting periodical for the magazine. Why do you use your teacher? How long have you used them and how has the relationship developed? Would you consider changing coaches?

I have been with my coach since I started playing, stick with him because he knows my swing better than I do and often stops at the range to give me tips and have a chat all in all he is just a tip bloke and bloody good coach.

I had some free lessons when I bought my Irons from another coach and it really messed my game up. Will never do it again it cost me a fortune to correct the faults the other coach taught me.

It was like going to a hairdressers when you have had your hair cut some place else and the hairdresser tuts away and criticises the other

My pro lives 30 minutes away from me. He too has changed my swing from the reverse pivot etc. Now i have got more power with less effort. My bad shots are normally playable, But the biggest difference is my shortgame. Ive had one shortgame lesson and that has cut five to ten shots off easily, i just havent played enough yet to record it. Im playin chips and pitches well close to the hole leaving almost guaranteed one put instead of two or three its amazing!!.
I wouldnt change pro at all because i get the service and equipment available to me that people paying twice the amount for a lesson would get. If my pro moved further away i would still see him but probably less often!
If i want an hour lesson he would probably spend an hour and a half with me, also he always pops over to see how im doin if im at the range for a practice session

Like htl, I've been with mine since I started. Luck of the draw really as there are three teaching pros at the course, one a GM top 25.
I get on well with all three of them, but have stuck with the same one for the coaching. He has a very easy style and is incredibly patient with daft questions, though I sometimes think that I might react well to a bit more 'aggression' - ex-forces influence.

My pro is about 15 minutes away, have only had 3 lessons with him but go to his course most weekends during the winter and use their driving range. He has left my swing the way it is and just changed my stance and grip, i have a flat 3/4 swing but he says it is square and i will get the distance i am looking for over time. Went for a round on Monday morning and never got on the course for 1/2 an hour because he was yapping so much, he let us on for nothing as the ground was hard under foot, cannot argue with that. I am now going to him on Friday to get some new irons because of his teaching and general attitude.

Have had the same teacher since I started, taught the group lessons when I was just thinking about playing then full lessons last year when I decided to start playing seriously.

I have used Finlay since day one.

He isn't the cheapest around but that isn't always the main priority.

We get on well, his teaching method suits me perfectly as I get very bored, very quickly with technical jargon.

My game has come on so much under his guidance and I would recommend his services to anybody.

Am looking forward to playing a game or 2 with him and the other guys there this year.

Am a relative newbie to golf. Only started at the end of last summer, on the subject of good coaches. Can anyone recommend one around the Sussex area. I live in Brighton but am prepared to travel a bit for a good coach.

Welcome Mr T, I'm from Brighton originally. Have you played Hollingbury? I grew up near there and its one course that I want to play, have to see if it's as I remember it.

played there last weekend (braved the wind) for the first time. Really was not impressed with the condition of the course. It was bad even for winter. I have seen pitch and putt in better condition.

Also thanks for the responses.
