Just watching a repeat of the 2008 Ryder Cup, was Faldo the biggest ever flop of a captain or maybe Mark James ?

Brings to me another question , when & who was the last English Capitan to win the Ryder Cup ?

Surely not another thread with an negative English slant involving the Ryder Cup

The Answer is Jacklin in 89 also the most successful Europe Ryder Cup captain with 3 wins

Faldo definitely split opinion and in my opinion didn't seem to take the job seriously, at least that was the impression he gave. I'm not sure his pairings worked but it's history now. James was always going to struggle in the conditions and atmosphere at Brookline but I thought his mistake was dropping Langer and Faldo, (and taking Coltart) and then not playing some of his side until the singles and putting them straight into that cauldron. Again, all opinion and history

Re:coltart not playing until Sunday singles vs Tiger. Apparently Tiger shook his hand on the 1st tee and described the shape of the hole for him as he hadn't played it before. 1 up before he teed off, we know what happened after that. Hilarious burn from TW.

For those of you who were around during the Jacklin years, what made him such a great captain? Maybe he was different when he was younger but now he comes across as someone perpetually miserable, often talking about his misfortunes at the hands of others and with very little in the way of charisma one would expect from a multi time successful Ryder Cup captain? So why was he so great?

Zzzzzz

I think the subject of whether Faldo or whoever has been the worst RC captain has been discussed countless times and I really dont see the point. I would rather watch the other programmes on Sky about Faldos triumphs.Try watching those on catch up rather than rare US wins in the RC and reigniting anti Faldo stuff. I prefer to remember him as the most successful golfer Britain has ever produced and along with Seve my boyhood hero

Tony Jacklin was the first Captain who gave the Ryder Cup team its identity and Sprite which it enjoys today. Before that they were a bunch of good players who just came together for the event. He organised things much better and got the players playing for each other.
