After Matthew Fitzpatrick made me a few quid at the British Masters at the weekend I have invested in a Taylormade R15 Driver. I would be keen to know peoples thoughts on this club and any help with getting the best set up without Trackman would be great. It seems like there are loads of configurations. It would be great to know how people have got on with it compared to their previous drivers.

Might have been an idea to ask for opinions before buying it. But what's done is done.

I had one at the start of the year, and I really liked it. I ended up changing to titleist because I went and got fitted in an effort to end my club hoing ways (which worked to be fair - I haven't been tempted by anything since).
The r15 was nice though, great solid sound/feel, looked ace in black and was actually a bit longer than the titleist 915d2 in my hands, but I had much more reliable dispersion with the titleist (probably because it was fitted...).

Haven't got any tips on setting it up. I had a 10.5 and cranked it down to 9.5 to open the face and lower the flight a bit, but that was just me, I am a very high ball hitter.

It needs hitting high on the face to get the best, I have mine set to mostly distance and 7 degrees or so and even when using decent sized tees, hit it out of the middle. I am not totally convinced it is better than my R11s yet though my swing was going through some oddities for a while there.

Hi there,

I've had mine around 3 weeks now and bought it having tried the demo head that my pro had. I went to the range and tried the basic settings which were; weight in the middle (9.5 & 10.5deg), and weights at either end (9.5 & 10.5deg). Hitting the ball consistently out the Middle of the face I got a bit more distance, carry & roll, with the weights in the centre. However, there seems to be good forgiveness and no big loss in distance with weights at either end.

I've got mine set at 10deg with weights in the centre and find flight and roll are fine with those settings. You should get yourself down to the range and have a go with plenty of balls at each setting and find out which feels best to you.

Hope that helps, but if you need more info just let me know.

Use Trackman ;)

I've referred to this before and will do again, but this article gives you a good idea of where that driver sits in relation to foregiveness, spin etc etc. http://www.mygolfspy.com/the-most-popular-drivers-of-2015-secret-cg-locations/

The adjustability in any driver is there to help a fitter dial in the club to your swing (on the day) then leave it be. I'd argue it's not really there for people to have a fanny around with to try and get the best out if it themselves unless you really know what you are doing. As especially when you get to modern drivers like this one there are so many things you can change, and unless it is very pronounced, any changes in ball flights and distances will be very hard to spot with the naked eye.

But with all modern drivers, hit it in the middle and it will go a long way.

The guy has bought an R15, so that's already done. He maybe hasn't got fitted but he's got the club and he's entitled to do whatever he wants with his money and also with his adjustment tool.

Regardless of what standard he's at he should adjust the club and its settings for himself and find out what HE likes and what feels good to HIM.

To the OP, your club your money go and jut some balls and do whatever works out best for you!

Bought an R15 on an impulse and to be honest never really got on with it, almost certainly down to my own failings rather than the club. To be honest it's my own fault as well as I had the R11s previously and didn't particularly like that either so not sure why I thought the R15 would improve things.

Use the Cobra Fly Z and (for me) it's the best driver I've ever had. Seems to allow me to get away with my shonky swings without a completely disastrous result. Best thing was that I picked it up off eBay for a snip so wasn't an overly expensive experiment if it failed. Going to try out the King Ltd driver on Friday just to see how that compares, we'll see....

Anyway, as above. If you hit it well then more power to you......also, dick around with the adjustment tool as much as you like, that's what it's there for.....

Took a little while to get used to mine but that's mostly my swing.

Found I benefited from the higher loft setting as I've always hit a lower ball than some.

Not really noticed much difference in the the draw/fade weights so I vary from both in the middle to one at each end.

Nice club though my old one was 10 years old so I was bound to benefit distance wise. Can't see me using anything else for quite some time.

No one is denying his right to have a mess with him himself. But with all due respect and the best will in the world, asking others how they have set theirs up and whacking a few balls, having a fiddle with one of the many ways you can adjust it and trying to see what difference it makes is probably not the best way to get the most out of an investment in a driver like that.

See if there is a local pro with trackman/gc2. Explain to them what the situation is and I am sure if say the OP said he wanted to have a couple of lessons, one of which would be 'fitting' the driver to his specs and the next a lesson on driving, then that would be a sound way of doing it.

The original post specifically said WITHOUT TRACKMAN, and specifically requested feedback from those with an R15 to give some info on what they have done with their club in terms of adjustment.

Most of the respondees managed to get that and provide feedback as requested. Not all golfers want to get bogged down in track man numbers, and others who do are also perfectly entitled to do so if they wish.

I tried the track man approach and got some numbers but my main influence was based on playing a few holes, in some cases full rounds, with the Driver on my course and assessing I) where it got me in comparison to my existing server and ii) how it felt whilst using it

Back to OP, I like the club and it has given me more than I expected at yhe outset. I've adjusted the loft down, and depending on how I feel I'm swinging I'll either play with the weights in the centre (if swing is good) or at either end of the tracks (if swing is a bit off).
