I recently went for a custom fitting at the Belfry and after hitting 8 different makes of driver decided on the R1 as it produced the best numbers on the launch monitor and felt the most solid on the strikes.
My aim was to lower my ball flight and increase the rollout as I play on a very windy course and although my carry distance is adequate the ball stops almost dead, the R1 reduced my spin from 4500 rpm to 2200 and the landing angle from 15 to 12 degrees which produced a noticeably lower ball flight but surprisingly increased carry distance.
I bought mine from my local pro and tested it on the course only to find everything slicing on the 9 degree setting (3 degrees closed), same set up at my custom fitting went straight, but after increasing the loft to 10 degrees (2 degrees closed) the drives straightened out.
The club feels very solid, although some may think it boardy, therefore its difficult to feel the miss hits although these still seemed to fly nicely.
I think with a bit of tinkering most people would find a setting to suit them and it is very easy to hit, unusually it felt shorter than the other drivers I tried but the clubs looked to be the same length.
I think the club looks ugly and way to busy but you soon get used to it and having previously not got on with Taylormade drivers was very surprised that I ended up choosing the R1, the closest in performance was the Titleist D2 but this felt less forgiving and more difficult to middle (purely subjective comparison but I feel confidence is important in my clubs especially for driving)

Thanks for the write up!

Be sure to update this thread with your progress. BIG difference in spin rate..... what driver were you using before?

Callaway razr hawk 9.5 was previous driver every one I tried was a lot less spin might be becos they were all adjusted to 9. Biggest plus was getting lower flight with more carry as well
