So me and a few other forumites (plus some guys from another forum!, Another forum?!! There is only 1 surely!!) were invited to the HQ of Taylormade by Jimbob Someroooooooo.

Met up in reception to see all sorts of memorabilia, most of note was Justin Rose's bag and clubs from his US open win. The 8 of us then went to one of their meeting rooms, surrounded by every club in their range, tons of bags, hats etc etc. We then met Sean (insert surname here) who talked tech to us, was a very open forum and he answered all questions very honestly, openly admitted that they have recently launched too many products etc etc.. went on the say that most of their R&D guys are pretty much all ex aeronautical engineers, so have some pretty radical ideas!!

We then went on a tour of the warehouse, saw some horrors in the returns bin, then went to the customer build areas, pretty impressive stuff!

then we met Daryl, whom i had met before, he took us through the tour story of the hows and whys, who is a diva on tour, who changes clubs the least etc etc, then we finally went back to the meeting room to be met by the commercial director of TM, who again was very open and honest.

They admitted that TM as an organisation have become a little disconnected from us, the consumer and they are trying to fix that with days like today, roadshows, etc etc.

All in all, a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours, got to put faces to BT@Home and Hawkeye also.

Then finally we all tried to steal as much as we could, unfortunately James was wise to this and we left with nothing, except a nice little goodie bag including a cap, towel, sleeve of TP X balls, pen and keyring!

Thank you James for organising this, i think the session was really really interesting and i thoroughly enjoyed it!

Didnt manage to get any decent pics, was too busy talking or listening! But if James ever offers this up again, get on it people!!

sounds a very informative few hours, and not one most would have access to. Well done Mr Someroo:thup:

It was a great afternoon! Massive thanks to the guys at TaylorMade, I think everyone enjoyed it and benifitted from the experience.

Getting mightily tempted by the SLDR amd the mini now though...

Sounds a great experience, and it's good that TM are trying to understand where the world's golfers stand and what we want.

.. went on the say that most of their R&D guys are pretty much all ex aeronautical engineers, so have some pretty radical ideas!!

I remember my old man telling me about a conversation he had with an engineer from Callaway, my Dad has worked at Rolls-Royce for 40 odd years and they used the same technology for keeping planes in the air as Cally did for making drivers hit the ball further!

To add...

There was the obvious discussion about product launch frequency and there was a general concensus that TM screwed up last year but that was because the SLDR was supposed to be launched this year but the Adidas money men pulled it forward.

There was talk about the SLDR and the yardage gains at their fittings. Being the cynic that I am I suggested that if you took anyone with a badly fitted driver and properly fitted them for any make you would see those gains and while Sean agreed to a point, I get the impression the TM genuinely believe the SLDR is a superior product and they seem very proud of it. Apparently the position of the COG is patented by TM so no-one else can put it in the same place.

One interesting point is that "Loft Up" was discovered by accident. When they fitted the tour pros they noticed that with the same loft they were getting less spin and they increased spin by adding loft. The selling point of the SLDR was originally going to be the sliding weight system.

The chat with Daryl was interesting. I asked him how much difference a pro would need to see in terms of yardage to swap to a new driver and the answer was they would all bite his hand off for just 1 yard. It seems distance is king and the general thought on tour is that long game is more important than short game. The closer you get to the green the more chance of making birdie. With irons, the gaps between the clubs are more important than distance.

Some other snippets...

The heads used by the pros are the same as the retail ones with the exception of having a longer hosel so they can bend them and that they are checked to ensure that none sneak through that break the tolererances for COR etc.

Retief Goosen's grip is horrible.

Don't expect to find a SLDR mini too easy to come by, they have a backlog.

If they get the swing weight wrong by just 1 gm, every pro on tour would notice instantly

All in all it was an interesting day, even for a cynic like me so thanks to Jimbob for organising it

Definitely a great insight into the TMAG empire, and the frankness and honesty shown by those talking was impressive and very nice to see. The warehouse tour, custom fit workshop stations, tour workshop were awesome to see, the sheer scale of the kit that gets shipped from just around the corner from me is quite incredible (approx. 1500 pieces leave the warehouse on my busy day!!!).

Great idea from Jimbob, Jess and the rest of the TMAG team, the only thing that would have made it better is if they would have let me walk off with the 12* SLDR Mini they had on display :)
