Hi, i wonder if anyone could help please. I have been looking at the new fairway burner clubs from Taylormade. i have never used fairway clubs and am getting the 3 and 5 wood for Christmas. However i know i need a stiff shaft, but i have found a website that does custom builds in these clubs and i haven't a clue what i should look for or what is the best. this is the website http://www.snaintongolf.co.uk/product.php/923/taylormade_burner_fairway_wood

it gives options for grip type - taylormade standard, lambkin crossline or compound
gripsize - 1 tape, or midsize
shaft type - TM Fujikura standard, Aldila NV or UST Pro Force

I have tried looking these up on the internet but am none the wiser, and i would like to get an idea of what these mean instead of just going for the best or the standard.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have got a taylor made 3 wood, "old" R5 dual. Fabulous, you'd struggle to go wrong with one of these.

Options....oh, yes.

The choice of shafts is good, the Fujikura is a great shaft, the Aldila is possibly better, but £30!!

You'd need regular (unless you generate a lot of speed!)

The grips is choice, the standard is also very good. It has no cord....do you have/like corded.

Single tape (standard) or midsize (for larger hands, see madandras post on here ...get a Grip....)
You can have standard with 2 layers of tape if you want to get picky!!

I'd just plump for one "as they come", the regular stuff is really very good indeed, no complaints here about the shaft or grip on ready to go TM stuff.

99% or players are safe with 3 and 5 woods, it's drivers where you can make costly mistakes.

Thanks Dave, think i will heed your advice. i'll go for the standard club but probably go for the midsized grip as i am quite big.i didn't know whether to go for stiff or flexible, do you think a flexible shaft would be best unless i have a really fast swing. especially as i am a 22 handicapper. would i be right in saying you'd need to be pretty fast and accurate with the stiff option and maybe the flexible shaft would be best.

Thanks

It is important to get this right, and the club seller should be able to recommend the right flex if he sees your swing. Too stiff and it will fly low, and probably out to the right. Too flexi and it will hook badly.

In general a stiffer shaft will offer more control, and a softer shaft more power. You should play with the softest shaft you can get away with, which will give you the most controlable power.

My advice - get custom fit. These aren't cheap clubs and you don't want to get it wrong.

I have heard that stiff shafts can also help to keep the flight lower so are not just speed related. Is this true guys?

Partly, maybe, the most likely result of using a stiff when you don't need is that you won't get the face square because of the torque setting in the shaft = more slicing and undrawn (if you push) woods.

It's true......

If you are on the cusp, always go with the reg.

I would love to blame my occasional push/slice on the shaft but I think its all down to me and my poor driver setup! (am working to fix, strangely other clubs are fine!)

When I was fitted for driver I was told regular was not an option for my swing speed (110mph) so I assume that was correct?

A playing partner had always played stiff drivers until he actually got fitted, was told regular was what he needed and his driving is like night and day since!

Holy Cow....110 mph.....you need to cut back on the weetabix!! regular wasn't just "not an option".....the shaft would have burned up on re-entry into the atmosphere. 110 mph....what are you driving it...310 on a good one????
I need to lie down....
water, water,

I'd be surprised if 110 wasn't nearer X S !

If I get a hold of one it will go :D

I'm 6ft 6 though which apparently helps.

When I was fitted for new driver, best option was an 8.5 Tour spec FT-i with the heavier 686 shaft. That brought swing speed down to 105 if I remember and just kept me in the 'stiff' bracket without having to go into custom shafts.
