Filed my tax return and my accountants have indicated a rebate of just over £2k, it's going in tomorrow, how long [roughly] does it take for the rebate to come through, I've supplied my bank details on the return which apparently speeds it up.

SInce I retired year last august, it seems I have got the tax office on speed dial. Sis in law who works for the tax office sys the governments have been cute that over the years you /me/ us are now accountable for our tax and codes.
when our pit shut we paid tax on our redundancy. The Union took the tax office to court and said that is against the law. The tax office knew it, but said it had to contact th government to see if they could give refunds. It can. It has been going through an assessment period for Everyman it took tax off to give them a rebate.
When we finished, I was dragging a pension I had paid into for two - three years, it was about £106.26 a month. When the company went bust, This went into the pension protection fund (PPF) . The PPF sent everyone's personal details to the tax office coz we were paying tax on it. The tax office for some reason then put me down as recieving £106.26 per month form one pension provider and £106.26 PER WEEK from the PPF. At one point I was paying as much tax as I was dragging for me flippin pensions. It was a flippin nightmare trying to sort it out on the phone
( when I eventually got through).
Lord knows how the elderly get on. To a large extent, I don't blame the tax office they are now working a system they have been told to work. gone are the days as sis in law says, you went to the local tax office with your wage slips etc and sorted out your probs face to face.
Fish I think you should get your cash sometime before Christmas, not sure which one though.

Usually within 5-7 days Robin, assuming it doesn't get flagged for further checks.
I got roughly £1500 in 2015 and it came through 7 days (5 working days) later.

Assuming the refund is going straight to you and not via your accountants clients bank account, then anything from 3-5 working days is normal, assuming no further checks. That is what they are currently running at.

HMRC normally don't like people chasing refunds before 28 days tho.

Often takes a while, my wife's situation has changed a lot of their last few years, as has mine.

I kept a close eye on my tax codes and managed to ensure we got a fair bit back.

With my wife working part time the new marriage allowance thing has been brilliant!

Thanks everyone, being mildly injured so not playing this weekend, I could be going shiny shopping soon then

I have the princely sum of £42 to come back and i dont expect to see it for a few weeks, and i never forget its my money they wrongly took from me, although, as in Fish's case, it can be a good savings scheme.

I sent my first tax return in at the beginning of Feb. At the end of the online process
they told me I have overpaid £300 in tax.
I was aware my return was late at the time, today I recieved a letter demanding the £100 fine for being late. The problem is I still haven't had my £300 back that I had overpaid. How long should it take for them to send me it?

They aren't the most efficient when it comes to giving you money that you are owed. When Mrs Colch was pregnant with the younger Colch jnr her maternity period was over two tax years. She received the first part of her maternity pay but we are still waiting to receive the second installment from the following tax year.

To put this into perspective, the younger Colch jnr will be 6 in June this year.

Unbelievable...isn't there a cut off after 6 years?
I'm sure after 6 years has elapsed you aren't entitled to claim anything off them.

I only worked self-employed for a short period. Unfortunately it's also over two tax years, so I'm gonna have to go through this rigmarole again next January.

They won't send you anything if you owe them, even if it's less, they won't deduct it, pay your fine and the £300 will then be forthcoming.
