It's losing £1 million a day, it is reported that the government is looking to buy out the six sites.
Good deal for the taxpayer or not.

Were's the info about Government interest? Can only see the announcement Tata are possibly selling off?

Was the main story on BBC news. One of the Tory MPs to do with trade and industry was saying the government will have to be involved in some capacity.

BBC website has got them being criticised for not sending a rep to India for the Tata mtg.

Sorry misunderstood the thread.

I thought only posh people was allowed to pinch potatoes from now on.:D

Ill get my coat.

Industry going down the tubes in this country and only going to continue with cheaper alternatives in place abroad.

My brother in law own his own fab shop and buys a lot of metals from various places- says a lot of the stuff from China and India is garbage and doesn't have the shelf life needed in the highly demanding machinery he makes parts for. Germany is where a lot of the top notch stuff comes from but at an expensive price

I doubt if the EU would allow the Government to subsidise the cost of steel.

Spot on. The UK government is not allowed to purchase UK steel, for infrastructure etc, if it can be sourced cheaper within the EU, from Poland for instance. Also unable to impose tariffs on cheap Chinese steel to make us competitive. I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I believe the eu's tariff on Chinese steel is around 25%, whereas the usa imposes around 260%.

A Conservative govt nationalising an old school heavy industry. An industry that is historically in Labour heartlands. Not going to happen in my lifetime. It goes against their principles and also their political radar.

Looking after our planet and producing cheap energy don't go hand in hand... That's what [eventually] will bring manufacturing, in the west, to an end... If China and others can't be asked, about the planet, then we'll just have to keep raising import tariffs to make them think again...

What a mess. We want to be 'Greener' so let our industries that produce carbon die, then we purchase the products from countries that have more pollution than us and put our own people out of work.

When it comes to steel or some working class job, the Tory position is harsh free market realism. When it comes to their mates in the City, different story.

That was part of the governments thought process behind closing the British pits. We don't produce the coal so we don't get charged for the carbon emissions associated with burning said coal. The flip side is that the coal is still burned in this country but is imported from the other side of the world. Strangely enough the carbon emissions produced to transport said coal from the other side of the world is not ours either.

It is already privately owned.

The UK government will not provide the cash because of EU rules - not that it has stopped France and its buddies doing it by the backdoor. The UK may be able to play with energy costs but that's at the margin.

Until pressure is brought on China to peg/fix its currency exchange rate it will be able to maintain it artificially status as the cheapest source of just about anything. China's growth has slowed; they now have excess capacity. This means they are desperate to hoover up any business from the rest of the world which will mean they will continue to keep their currency undervalued.

Its a daft situation where the 'West' and rest-of-the-world impose constraints on their businesses vis via wages, working conditions, environmental 'taxes' yet turn a blind eye to child labour, pollution and poverty in the Nations who supply us.

The UK steel industry has no feasible future as long as the 'twisted' competition is not strategically addressed.
