Off the back of the luck thread, it got me thinking about my round on Tuesday evening. Played in the Lady Captain's day mixed 4BBB, a nice friendly affair playing against a friendly husband/ wife team. I always talk to my ball, especially when I've not hit it so well, yelling at it to "sit", "bite", "get back", "fade" etc....... you get the drill.

During the round on Tuesday, we were all being quite pleasant and friendly, I even found myself talking to balls on behalf of the other couple. The chap hit a couple of bad one's that went towards the trees, at which point I'm yelling at the ball to "bounce out", which it kindly did for him on both occasions....whilst he silently looked on. At one point he hit towards a bunker, the ball pitched over onto the slope above and started to role back in, me yelling "stay there".... which it did.... before I realized what 'I'd been doing and apologised to him - he may have wanted it to fall back into the bunker for an easier stance, more so than playing off the uphill slope with his heels hanging over the edge of the bunker :-) Must remember to only talk to my own balls........

So do you talk to your ball.... and does it listen?

Weirdly only around the green & usually just 'hit the flag' right before it speeds past from an over-hit chip or putt

The rest of the time I tend to tell myself off in the third person rather than talk to the ball i.e 'Aw what did you do that for you silly billy!' With a couple of stronger words added for effect

Talking to you're ball mid flight is boarderline lunacy

I mean come on fellas, its an inanimate object!

I find it much better to ask (shout at) the wind to blow harder or softer in order to change the direction of flight. Generally i have minimum success with this, however i am a patient man.....

Playing a 4BBB a few weeks ago, I was talking to my shot as it flew through the air and it landed just left of the green. As I approached my oppo he said " that shot looked pretty good to me" after I few seconds it dawned on me and I had to point out I was shouting "cut!"......

Of course the ball cannot hear you or act on your spoken instructions.

However I do think it's not a bad thing to "talk" to your ball, keeps you mentally engaged with its flight and result. That can only help you score better.

Can I nominate this as the best 7000th post in the history of golf forums?

I'm glad it's not just me

I don't understand whats funny?

The alternative is hitting the ball then looking away? Is it not better to actually try and follow the ball after you hit it? Surely you will see where it lands, if its in the rough you might find the ball easier if you do!

I bet if you can find a ball rather than taking 3 off the tee you will score lower!
