Is it legal to have 3 or 4 tee pegs tied together with string to make it easier to find the t peg after driving off ?

Yes, but there was a thread a couple of years back though about a guy who was using it as an alignment aid so beware of that one.
Can't say I blame you though, I mean these things aint cheap. Must be about 3p a piece or something.

Quite common to see 3 different sized "pegs" or cut off rubber cones during winter, when mats are in use.

As said ago above, there is no problem with this Peter. You will see sets of rubber cone shaped tees tied together with a cord in golf shops. Useful for winter golf when the ground is frozen!
The only potential breach of a rule is if you were to set out the string in such a way as to help you with your alignment - again as said above.

To confirm what others have said, the R&A (Rules Dept) has ruled that they are legitimate providing they are not actually used to assist with alignment.
However, the USGA (Equipment Dept) (where they have no history of them) has ruled that, as they could be used in such a way, they are illegal.
