New person here (been lurking for a little while but decided to join), so best start with a quick intro....my name is Darren, I'm 34, don't have a handicap and have been having regular 'group lessons' for some time now. My wife and I are expecting our first baby on 3rd June, so I expect that my golf time will soon be restricted :D

Right, this week I just got myself 3 months membership for my local GC's Par 3 course (£28 for 3 months was too good). I played as soon as I got the membeship (Tues), then again on Wednesday lunchtime, Wednesday evening (went round twice), then yesterday lunchtime and this lunchtime. Tuesday's round was 'ok' and withr the exception of first two holes, I struck the ball cleanly. Wednesday lunchtime was an improvement, as was the first round on Wednesday evening. The second round of the evening went wrong after 3 or 4 holes. Thursday lunchtime went the same as Wednesday evening, albeit I carded my best score of 31. This lunchtime also went the same way after 3 or 4 holes (didn't score the round).

What I'm about to write next is the scenario for Wednesday evening through to this lunchtime...

Prior to teeing off, I'd go to the nets to warm up by hitting a few SWs....go to the first tee, and strike the ball cleanly. Second and third holes followed suit.

Then for no apparent reason it all went downhill and I just couldn't recover. Every tee-shot pretty much comprised either topping the ball and it only going 20-30 yards, or thinning the ball to the left or right with a bit more distance. I just couldn't figure out what was happening and my frustration levels would increase. I'd take practice swings and gently brush the grass on the downswing...in my mind I was doing everything that I had done in the nets and on the first 3 holes. Confidence sank and I knew that as I walked to each tee the next tee-shot would be the same as the previous.

Now, I know that I need to erase this viscious 'mental' circle and start each hole with a fresh mindset, but it's easier said than done, especially if you believe you are doing everything correctly in terms of set-up etc.

I'm wondering if perhaps I'm overdoing things i.e playing too much? The trouble is, I want to put the last round behind me and make amends, but then the above scenario comes in to play!

Was curious to see if any of you folks have had similar things happen to you, and if you did, what did you do to overcome them? I'm just finding it all a bit annoying as I know I can hit the ball well enough....

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get my frsutrations off of my chest

There's probably a very simple flaw that's crept in and it'll get fixed at your next lesson :)

Perhaps you were getting a bit eager to see your shot fly long and high and were peeking a look too early, losing your spine angle and hitting the thin.

When I hit shots, I always try to make sure that I see the club hit the ball.

Good luck

Don't play too much golf, two rounds a day is plenty. Enjoy your free time, you sound stressed already so what chance do you have of going out and playing well?

Cheers for your replies chaps.

StrangelyBrown - I think there could well be an element of lifting my head up too soon. I guess that may be a symptom of my anxiousness to see which direction the ball went in, lol?!

Lyden - I had a feeling that I may be overdoing things a bit with my keenness to get out and make the most of my membership and to make amends for my errors in previous rounds. I think I'll take a break over the weekend and wait until the next lesson on Tuesday evening and discuss things with the pro.
