Ok we all know that loads of stuff can be found online vi you tube etc. but are there any good swing mechines DVD's or books that people have read/watched that has helped them.

Coming from my previous sport lots of tuition stuff was available in order to build a better technique, but with golf there seems to be alot more mechanics involved. would rather dvd format than book, but open to either.

Just trying to get a better understanding.

I am quite a bookworm but have found swing mechanics books difficult (Probably reading the wrong ones like)

I do like the pete cowen pyramid of learning dvd. Includes a few simple drills that i can do on the course after a rubbish shot that usually gets me going again.

Oddsocks - I have dipped in and out of Hogan's Book - Five Lessons, The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. I found it useful to refresh the basics. Not had any experience of training DVD's so can't comment.

If you want to borrow, PM me :)

I've been recommended a DVD called The Secret of Golf by David Blair. Whether it's any good or not, I've no idea but the guy who recommended it to me was quite enthusiastic about it.

The guy who produced the DVD has a website called http://www.swingbuildgolf.com/ where there are some sample videos that give you an idea of whats on the DVD. I liked the look of it so I actually bought it yesterday.

He also seems to have an ebay store, where it is a couple of quid (or so) cheaper.

Full swing I have used Jim McLellan for tempo and rhythm it is very very good. I have started using Phil Mickelson DVD and Dave Peltz Short Game Bible for my short game and the results are just starting to come.

I've been watching the Tom Watson DVD, Lessons for Life, and would say it's very good. Very clear and easy to follow. Not overly complex and technical and of course great practical demonstrations by the 5 times Open Champion.

For full swing Hogan's 5 lessons takes some beating. For short game Phil Mick's short game DVD also takes some beating. For how to score Ray Floyds Elements of Scoring. Study and put into practise everything from those and you'll be winning the Masters!

The Watson DVD is a little dissapointing, fun to watch and lots of good stuff, but it tries to do too much and glosses over too many important aspects of golf.

For websites:
targetcenteredgolf.com - a very very useful ebook for increasing distance (and generally learning how to swing the club with fluidity)

rotaryswing.com - the new Rotary Swing Tour is excellent. Whether or not you agree with the overall principles, there are dozens and dozens of interesting videos / drills. Kept me entertained for weeks.

For books:
Nail It - one of my favourites - basic principles, advises to keep things simple. Cuts through all the chaff normally associated with swings.

Swing Like a Pro - shows the "model golf swing" - excellent diagrams and drills. They also do a useful screensaver.

You missed one - 300 yards on the range for dummies :D With all these books and techniques when are you going to grace a course and put it into practice?

I enjoyed reading Hogans "Five Fundamentals" as it really does help with understanding the golf swing, but as to whether its good to learn from, I'm not convinced... It seems like it is a book written about what works for HIM but not necessarily what works for everyone (or anyone!!)...

I've heard that because Hogan fought a hook his whole life, the book is basically a guide on how not to hook it, which isnt really useful for the 90% of golfers slice the ball. My teacher actually said that the lessons in the book set back golf instruction ten years or something like that!!

I personally thik that while you can definitely broaden your understanding of the golf swing by reading books and watching videos (which definitely will help in some ways...) I think that learning the golf swing through "feeling" it with an instructor is the only way you can actually improve.. reason being that what you feel you are doing and what you are acually doing are always completely different.

But anyways, you probably know that already/don't care so Ill just answer your question in the OP (for once...)

I think the only book that I actually took a lot of useful stuff from was, very surprisingly, Tiger Woods book "How I play golf" Its not a technical book on the golf swing at all and a lot of the stuff in it is very basic, but I think thats one of the reasons its so great.

It is like the Hogan book in that its about how HE plays golf but it doesnt try to be anything else, and there are so many little swing thoughts, adjustments etc that he talks about that I still use today as they are absolutely spot on.

For example its not a book that says "in a fairway bunker you need to steepen your arc by cocking the wrist early and bending the right elbow to bring the club slightly outside the line..... or whatever. Its a book that says, "when I'm in a fairway bunker I lift my chin up and stand tall throughout the shot" which is not only simple (and possible to actually think about!) but it actually works a treat!

Ive read a few good books on the golf swing that help a lot with the understanding it, but in terms of actually helping me when I tee it up, Tigers book is the only one... (Of course excluding anything by Bob Rotella which, while not on the golf swing, are by far the best books Ive read for improving your golf)
