Is it just for show or is it an essential part of the swing?

Just seen a video of my swing from earlier today, my finishing position has the club really high not horizontal like I see in a lot of swings posted on here.

What's the general consensus?

*edit*

Sorry I've worded it badly, the club does finish nigh on horizontal but usually above my head rather than behind it.

Look at the pros, they finish in lots of different ways so as stated above its definately the impact position thats important.

I don't think it really matters how you finish as long as you do finish. Played today and realized i was kind of just getting passed impact then giving up. But once i started focusing on making it all the way though then i was hitting it so much better. But if you asked me to just go into my finish position i wouldn't have a clue wat it was as it just happens for me anyway.

Depends on your swing path really but you will find the best swings that are the most repeatable have the best finishing position.

It does show what sort of swing path you have. If you have a shallow swing path the club will be more horizontal and the steeper the swing path the more towards the ground the head of the club is. It's simple mechanics and can be used to tell you a lot about your swing.

I would say my finish position depends on the type of shot I've hit.
Not sure why but I really don't like Luke Donalds finish, suppose if I could strike it like him I'd learn to live with it tho.

On the other hand, I think the finishing position is VERY important.
Some people cut it short (Luke), others finish with the club wrapped round their neck (Rory) and some finish falling all over the place (Smiffy)*
Which ever way you do it, you must remain balanced. (I call it the Hollywood Position. Posing for the cameras)
I like to teach that you hold the Hollywood position until the ball lands
It does at least 4 good things to the swing without you having to think of all 4 things at once.
Watch the pros and see how balanced they are, then watch your playing partners on the course at the weekend.

Something my pro also finds important and asked me to work on.

I'm going to try that approach. Thanks Bob.

I guess it depends whether you can get in to a McIlroy finishing position or not and why not.
If you are not flexible enough (like most of us) or whether it is because of your swing.

My understanding is that if you are trying to hit the ball you are likely to have a high finish without a full turn
If you have a swing that focuses on completing a full swing, you are likely to complete with a full turn and therefore your club will be over your shoulder at the end of the swing.

The theory is that the latter will produce a better, more consistent and more powerful swing.

but to be fair - who cares if your balls flies straight and hits your intended target.

Thanks for the replies, very interesting reads, I managed to take some snapshots in VLC Player, hope they post ok.
First is with PW second with my 16 deg hybrid.
