My game has been struggling for a while now. And I am tempted to start again and build a new swing. I have never been that consistent with normally the odd low 70s rounds and the rounds in the low 80s have been off 6 for the last 5 year. I tend to get very laid off at the top and often struggle with the shanks in the height of summer. I was looking at YouTube and noticed this guy (my swing evolution ) and he has modelled his swing on hogans. Now watched quiet a few of his clips now and I think he's a little odd but I'm liking his swing model idea. Any thoughts on him. I know lessons would probably be better but haven't the time or money to go see a pro so would be self taught at the range. I'm 41 have been playing since the age of 9 and self taught. Only having 2 lessons in 30 years.

Do you mean this? https://www.youtube.com/user/myswingevolution Anything like the one plane swing described here http://www.planetruthgolf.com/ ?

Jim Hardy, who first named the "one plane swing" did so after discussing Ben Hogan with John Jacobs. Hardy remarked that Hogan's swing looked flat & Jacobs said "yes, that's because he swings it on one plane". This got Hardy thinking and from that came "The Plane Truth", a book that has helped my game immensely

Well Hogan's swing is widely regarded as a classic but he had Ben Hogan' talent, strength and time to practice. You may or may not have any of those. His swing was also designed to achieve a specific objective - to let him hot the ball as hard as possible without hooking it. Many amateurs who copy it do not get the same result.

It really just depends on how much you're prepared to put into it, i'd expect you to take a huge step backwards to rebuild your swing but if you're not happy with what you've got just go for it. I tried it half heartedly a while back, but took fright and went back to what i know and accepted my short comings. Good luck m8

I agree with this. When I went to the pro I have lessons with back in December 2012 for a real makeover and something more reliable he introduced me to one plane and I have to say it has definitely helped the way I swing. I've got the book too and it is a good read and would give the OP some good pointers I think.

Anyone remotely interested vin Ben Hogan should read this. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ben-Hogan-Authorised-Biography-Life/dp/1845131096

It's got the saddest opening paragraph I've ever read and is a fascinating read.

Incidentally, there are some who have read Ben Hogan's "Five Fundamentals" and say that he didn't actually do what he said he did & others who say that he left his real secret out of the book.

Yes this I what I mean.so perhaps I should concentrate on just a 1 piece swing. I've got time to go to a local driving range but my club is a good 40 min drive each way and I'm thinking when I drop my daughter to nursery I could hit the range straight after. And get some practice in before picking them up at 1

depends what your normal ball flight & shot direction & curvatures are when you're hitting it well is?

what your contemplating doing could exacerbate your swing issues a ways. if the swing length of your normal swing is more 3/4 length, not parallel at the top, the shaft is naturally going to be laid off at the top anyways.

not saying either, what you're thinking about doing wouldn't/couldn't help, but, you've got to the handicap index you have, so the swing motion must have a bunch of good things in it. probably a ways better & quicker to find what the problem is & fix that, rather than starting kinda from the ground up with a more or less total remodel maybes?

nobody swings the club on one plane. perceived top teachers often need a 'handle', a short 'hook' a modus operandi to be able to sell books ect, & Hardy chose the 'one plane' angle, Jim McClean had his 'steps' etc. kinda the only player who ever came really close to a single plane, in a way, was Moe Norman, not a swing model that would be good to try to emulate, possibly the straightest ball striker ever but a definite one off.

I don't believe Jim Hardy means that the club is swung on one plane in a "one plane" swing. What he says is that, at the top, the arms & shoulders are on approximately the same plane, or the arms are slightly, but not much, above the shoulder plane.

Interesting, though, that the most extreme one planer, Mo, was one of the most accurate hitters who ever lived, acknowledged car such by, among others, Tiger Woods.

no, agree, don't think Hardy was actually saying that. that's what I was saying about a 'handle' - a 'one plane' much catchier handle than a just a 'flatter swing plane'.

Moe indeed an amazing ball striker for sure, perhaps nearest in a ways to one plane, but again not really totally one plane either.

Moe always had a foot & body alignment that was always aimed a ways right of his target, so closed at address.
but then an adjustment, compensatory move in the downswing meant he then really swung the club down & to the left in swing direction through impact.

fact that he was always swinging left through impact in direction was why he 'appeared' to swing down the line of the shot for longer than anyone else.

what he was really doing though when he wanted to hit the ball straight, was hitting small straight pulls everytime.
(apologies to the OP for the minor thread hijack.)
