Yesterday I played in the monthly stableford (about 70 players in my division) - but in the usual way was also in the Sunday "Swindle" (about 20 of us). Got off to a bad start. Nil points on the first, and two balls OOB over the fence on the second - also resulted in another nil. Walking to the third, I joked with a playing partner "all I need is 16 three pointers and I'm laughing..."

I didn't get them, but did manage my best golf in ages and got 36 points off the last 16 holes - so was well chuffed. Even more chuffed to find that 36 points was good enough for second place in the Swindle - my first ever prize money at golf (even if it was only a tenner..) :D :D

So, imagine my surprise today to see on Howdidido to see that 36 points was also good enough for second place in the monthly stableford. But my hopes were dashed to see that I'd been marked down as N/R...

So - who's got any guesses what I've done wrong? I know the card was marked properly, both me & my marker had signed it, it had the comp name on it, it had my handicap on it. So what else could be wrong - or have I been stitched?

Do you have to enter the start time and the tee of the day? We have to register before we go out on our club system and if you don't you get D/Q'd even if you put the card in (don't ask - I've no idea). Otherwise I'd be asking questions as it sounds like you've done everything by the book

Not really - you book a time in advance by signing the sheet pinned on the notice board, and just have to sign in at the pro shop before you go out. Haven't entered time & tees on cards for other comps ( 2 of 'em) and didn't get N/R for those.

Suggest you quiery it

always useful to know if you have done something wrong, and even nicer to rub the officials nose in it when they get it wrong

If that was the reason here then about 20 of them should have been N/R'd.

I guess it must be a technical infringement like not ticking the tee used or not putting your handicap on or some other heinous crime against humanity.

Or you've been shafted - good and proper.
Give 'em hell - I'm still waiting for my card balls-up from 2 weeks ago to be put right.

It is against the rules of golf to play two competitions at the same time.
You either play in the swindle or the stableford.

This is done all the time in our wednesday section the comp is usualy a medal or stableford played in fourballs and the two pairs have a matchplay game between themselves.

I would check if you need to put a start time on your card or indicate which tee was used as Homer said. It may be that they have not bothered to D.Q. you before as your score was not a winner or it has not needed a handicap adjustment. Either way in my experience you will not budge the committee once they have put the boot in.

is there a competition signing in sheet?

we have to sign in upon arrival against a numbered sheet. You then put the competition entry number with your name on your card, and also on your payment envelope, so all three can be cross checked.

If you don't pay, sign in, and submit a correct card, you are DQ'd. Have you complied with all such rules at your club?

We had a recent case when a chap was walking past the clubhouse to the 16th tee at 2 under gross (off 8 handicap), so was surely going to win the medal. His playing partner joked with him - hope you remembered to sign us in - as he had seen some others signing the sheet by the locker room. He soon had his question answered when the bloke who was 2 under kicked his clubs across the car park....

Strange one this, as a N/R points in the direction of not completing the score/round on the card where as a mistake i.e. not signing would give you a DQ

I think you need to speak to the club and get them to clarify exactly what you were N/R'd for.

Have you played your 3 qualifiers this year, to get your handicap active?

Correct me if I'm missing something here, but it was a stableford comp. ok, so in stableford you can have a blob/ding at a hole. so then you wont have a gross score. IMO thats when the NR comes in you havent returned a gross score. In Stableford it dosen't really matter about NR's. It's to do with points so the only reason you would get a NR, is if it's a stroke competition.
If I was making someones card in stableford I would put a stroke in the box were he blobbed. In the pts box I would put another stroke. In a stroke competition if the same happened I would then put a NR in at the hole where he didnt score.
Maybe I'm missing something here, did your score count towards a prize, if not it should have.

Did it have the date of the competition on it?? that could be the reason maybe!

Other than that if this "swindle" competition is a side bet with you andyour amtes you are quite entitled to play in that.

Did you put your score in the computer as well as handing in your card ? Most systems have a function to count scores for players entering and not recording a score as NR. Most committees will not reconcile the actual cards returned as we have computers to save work like that. I'd check with the comp secretary as something is clearly wrong.
