Great league, play different courses each month - February to October, live scoring, great monthly winner and overall winners prizes by Nike and Loudmouth, good value and the grand final is at The Shire!

Played my first year in 2015 and had a great time. Competitive but fun.

Speak to Ben and say Nick sent you!

I don't even understand the leaderboard for last year  lowest round 89 for a 7 h/cap?

Hi, this is the order of merit points earned. If you win an event you get 100 OoM points, 2nd gets 95, 3rd gets 92, 4th 90, 5th 89 and then down in one point increments to last place.

The OoM leaderboard is worked out on a 'best five' system, so 89 was their worst position from their best five.

The link for the SS Tour is as follows:

Feel free to ask any questions and I will happy to answer away!

Fair enough, will look into it a bit more thanks to your reply.... and as such I'd think about making the website a little clearer for idiots like me else I'd have literally just walked away thru lack of understanding.

looks excellent, nice range of courses

chance i may be spending some time on the sussex coast next year, if so will try and play a few if im back to full fitness

the bit that doesnt make sense to me is why then have the final at the shire and a trek away rather than at a local course (plenty of good ones to choose from)

I played on it the first year it kicked off, was a great concept but at the time they wasn't monitoring the handicaps correctly. A guy moaned after shooting 40+ points off 19 and not winning..... Even though his club handicap was 13/14.

I went dragons den stylie... " I'm out! "

The company that run this - Golf Days UK - also run a Norfolk tour in the same format. The winner of the Order of Merit for each tour wins a Nike Tour golf bag and Nike driver. The top 14 from each tour + 1 wildcard from each from a nearest the pin shootout go forward to a complimentary final at The Shire. I would guess that they have tried to pick a decent course somewhere between the two tour locations. The winner of the grand final (one from each of the tours I believe) wins a full set of custom fit Nike irons and golf at Archerfield Links.

This is the link to the Norfolk Tour page of their website that explains it better than I have.....

Good question and the reason is as follows:

We have two Am Tours, one in Surrey/Sussex and one in Norfolk, we host the Grand Final on day (two separate comps) but by making them on the same day it is logistically better for us. And it's nice to have an event outside the counties so that no one has 'home advantage' of it being hosted at their clubs.

Hi Barry, that's not quite true what happened.. We very rarely get people shooting over 40 points and 36 would normally win any event, with one event this year actually being won with 29 as it was a tough day on a hard course! Since the first year we have also made improvements to the tours and as always, handicap monitoring as one of our highest priorities and we'd love you to come back to try again....

Ben, how are the he's being monitored as the first year it was kind of a trust basis. I appreciate the tour was in its first year when I played and I've seen its come on leaps and bounds with regarding sponsorship and so on.

makes sense thanks for the reply

always look on enviously at these tours as they never seem to crop up in the milton keynes area lol

The first year and possibly the second it wasn't a requirement to have a club handicap to take part in the events. The only reason I no longer play is because you now have to be a member of a club and have a club handicap certificate. As a nomad golfer this means I can't play in them any more.

I also believe that they have a "Tour handicap" whereby for every point over 36 you score you get cut (1/2 a shot ?????) for the next event you play in so if someone with an 8 handicap playing off a 3/4 handicap of 6 in one event shoots 40 points they would be cut 2 shots for the next event and would then play off 3/4 of 6. I think this is correct but I'm sure Ben will let you know if it's not.

That's correct! Handicaps are also checked randomly every month with players clubs.

We know we will never please everyone with how we run handicaps, but after five years of running these events, we now believe we have the best solution that is fair for all.

Certainly sounds like it's progressed in a good way, my only negative was the way the h/c were run on trust which looks like it's be revised and now much more transparent

You can't do a lot more than this.

Thee are conflicts of interest though - logically you shouldn't reset handicaps each year where someone previously proved on the tour that they were better than their club handicap; but I understand that you do.

I would probably do the same if I ran it! You have a business responsibility to the tour supporters as well as one to the occasional entry. Balance.

I write this as a tour event winner (on less than 36 points,,,) - only time pressures as VC and C this year have prevented me playing in events for the last couple of years. Well run and enjoyable.

Hmm, sounds like this event is well organised, and nice to see someone associated with the competition giving some honest answers to peoples questions. If I was in the UK, and around either one of these areas I would certainly enter. Sounds like it a far better moderated and run competition, with at least some checks on handicaps that would make 'bandits' think twice about entering. Let the 'short game wizard' stick to the 'type of hat that must not be mentioned tour' and 'get onboard' guys would be my response. Only shame is that it is takes place on Mondays, which must reduce the fields somewhat?

Thanks for your kind comments Duncan, hopefully we may see you again on the tour at some point - donning those Loudmouth trousers you won? Blue with Orange and White diamonds wasn't it!?

Thanks, we do our best to monitor what is going on with handicaps and should someone appear to 'cheating the system' we are well within our rights to do something about their further participation in the events!
A few seasons back we did host some events at the weekend and although this appeals to some, it doesn't to others - especially with lots of players wanting to play club golf at this time, so our numbers were actually worse hosting events at the weekend! We 100% appreciate that having events on any day during the week does cut out many people, but a bit like handicaps it's a difficult one to please everyone!
