For all those who have had their course shut or have not been able to play that much for weeks and so haven't been at your club - maybe we need to think a bit of our club pro - this must be knackering them.

Maybe we should each try and spend at least £20 say in our pro shop that we wouldn't have normally spent at this time of year. And if we were going to buy something on the interweb cos it's cheaper - maybe if pro has it or can source it - why not get through him.

We need to look after our pros in this weather - they might not be gone - but it's bound to be tougher for them not getting the income than for us just not playing.

Great idea and maybe a lesson as a refresher for the upcoming season. All for supporting the local pro at any course

Thankfully local pro has been able to continue to use the indoor club fitting for lessons etc

Certainly agree helping your local pro is great and will no doubt purchase some balls from him as well as the new Waterproof when it arrives

No resident pro at my place but I always support the guy who runs the shop at the club. It helps that he competes well on price with many items. On saying that I wouldn't support a pro just to support them. If they are good then by all means help keep them.

First read the opening post and thought... admirable

Read it again and it could almost be talking about looking after our OAP neighbours during a cold spell!

My take would be, providing your pro is doing enough in terms of effort and initiatives to help themselves then by all means support them, otherwise its perhaps for the best if they go under

I buy a lot of stuff from our pro already as he happens to do decent deals so he already gets enough of my support. However, I know there are several pros who aren't so competitive causing people to go elsewhere.

While the OP is admirable, if a pro doesn't help himself throughout the year, he can't expect people to support him when times are tough.

This

That goes for any pro at other clubs that I go to as well. If they have stuff that catches my eye and is competitively priced they will get my money.

Having spent around £1500 in the pro shop over the last 12 months I intend to spend as little as possible this month, and the rest of '14 for that matter!

I understand the sentiment, but if they're not competitive then whether we spend an extra £20 in there this Feb or not, they'll still be in trouble. It's just the way the world is going, online retailing reduces cost therefor can provide items cheaper...

Nice sentiment but our Pro, as I've said before, is as much good as a choccy teapot. He won't be helping me if I have to cancel lessons due to snow or ice...
If I can I will but its highly unlikely...

I'm not suggesting charity or buying something you don't really need and whether or not the pro is competitive in his pricing. Was myself really only thinking myself of buying a couple of gloves and dozen balls. Don't need them today but will later in the year. And if buying a new club - saving of £20 over your pro by buying on internet - then maybe you could buy through your pro just this time - but that's not really what I was getting at.

But then again I value our pro for more than his shop - many don't seem to and take a much harder view. Which is fine if you never need a bit of support from others to help you through a difficult time.

I admit I use mine more like a convenience store and as such in those circumstances I expect to pay a little more than elsewhere! However, he did just change my shafts so he got over £50 from me in the last 2 weeks.

I'm told he has another business with his brother also, so at the moment we haven't seen that much of him, but, his wife, a part-time member helper and his assistant seem to be more in attendance than him of late, not sure I agree with that when he's on a retainer to be present!

Golf is costing me more and I am getting less of it, there is no more money in the budget for the pro.

The course has been closed for the last 4 weekend, I have paid my subs and have then had to buy range balls as the course is closed(they really should give them away if they close the course). I am pretty sure the pro is not thinking about the fact that I have paid a month and received nothing.

If a pros business model relies on kindness hes not going to be in business very long.

I think any business has to look at peaks and troughs, good and bad times and
take that into account when there will be tough times.
Many, many businesses struggle when the weather is bad.
The high street especially.
Its tough.
Estate agents have had it tough for a few years in certain areas, now they are having good times again.
The car industry etc.
We unfortunately don't have a pro or a pro shop.
Whilst I applaud the op for his suggestion I need to save all the pennies I have for the golfing
season ahead.

Following Christmas I am also skint so if anyone would like to give me £20 just PM me, I accept Paypal or Bank Transfer, Thanks  :D

Absolutely - I'm not talking kindness or charity - I'm thinking such as bringing forward a planned purchase - or maybe making a purchase that you don't need at the moment but know you will need later in the year. BTW - I'm not suggesting for a second my pro is struggling - but given he's probably had a big hit on his business over the last 6 weeks due to the dreadful weather maybe I'll return some of the favours he's done me over the last 10 yrs.

I'm not for a second suggesting that if you don't, then somehow you are a bad or inconsiderate person. I'm just planting a seed of thought.
