I'm playing 18 tomorrow night and we have a 9 hole midweek stableford comp on that you can just pay on the day and go out and enter. The comp is a handicap qualifier so I definitely want to enter, but I was planning on submitting my card for the full 18 as a supplementary (before I realised we had a comp on). I therefore wondered, would I be allowed to either:

a) Submit the remaining 9 holes of my round on a separate card, i.e. not part of the comp as a supplementary 9-hole card
b) Submit the full 18 hole card in addition to the 9 hole comp, so effectively submit the 9 holes twice (unlikely!)
c) Only be able to submit the 9 hole comp card and not put in any supplementary

I think that, as it's a strokeplay event, you can only do one or the other as doing both would constitute practice on the course prior to the other?

I can't see a problem. I'd take two cards, mark them both at the same time for the front nine, then stick the 9 hole comp one in your bag and carry on with the supplementary.

You obviously can't play a match while playing stroke play, but as I said, I can't see a problem with this.

Over to the experts......

I can see a problem.

Let's say you had a storming front nine which led to a significant handicap reduction. If you carried on to add the back nine for a Supplementary, you could be playing off a wrong handicap, and, if you play the back nine well, you could have handicap reductions from both cards! Sounds like a non-starter to me.

Why would you want to do a supplementary when you are already doing a qualifier or vice verky. Supps were really introduced to enable those who are unable to enter normal Qs to have an alternative method to keep a competition (active) handicap.

But I could calculate my new handicap off the "storming front 9" no? It'll just be like playing 2 separate rounds on the same day...

I'm not sure BUT they are two separate qualifying cards so would assume (risky!) the 2nd one would be DQd as practice beforehand...

I thought practice only counted in regards to competitions, not just a qualifying card? I can't see anything in the rules regarding practice on the course and submitting an additional card for handicap purposes.

For a number of reasons, but mainly because I simply can't get to play in enough comps, but I want my handicap to reflect my level of play better

Not sure but surely the idea of a supp is it is played under the same rules as a qualifying comp?

There is specific mention of practise prior to supp cards http://www.englandgolf.org/page.aspx?sitesectionid=340

worth a read.

I was doing some digging and I literally just found that link myself

Note 1: In submitting Supplementary Scores, players need to ensure that they are not in breach of Rule 7 of the R&A Rules of Golf (Practice). A Club Committee may apply the Note to Rule 7-1 and allow a Supplementary Score to be returned following the playing of a stroke play round earlier in the day.

However, it also states

The score must be returned over 18 holes. 9 hole Supplementary Scores are not permitted

So I would assume I can't put in a 9 hole sup and 18 wouldn't count at 9 of those is in the comp anyway.

Ahhh, missed the bit where the 9 hole was a handicap qualifier. :o

I can see a problem now.

Yes, which I am, but I wanted to put in an additional card as well as the comp qualifier, i.e. 2 fore the price of 1.

No can do would is me thought. Supplementary must be 18 holes, in which case the 9-hole qualifier would count as 'practice'!

Just burn it up on the front 9 and take the 18 points for the back!

Apart from the fact that you can'y play 9 hole SSs, it is almost certain that the back 9 will not have bee registered as a 9 hole course.
In addition the tees for the 18 hole course may be white (say) but the white tees have not been registered for 9 hole comps either. Most clubs usually only register one set of 9 hole tees.
