So today I did a supplementary card, because the chance of playing in competitions is getting a little thin and I wanted to keep the momentum going. The par is 71 and SSS is 72, will they take the SSS? And further more I shot 76, I was 6 over on my first nine ( which was the back nine ... The easier one of the two) and then one under par gross for the second nine ( which is affectively the front nine... Which is a tricky lumpy putting test ) will I have triggered the ESR? Will they look at the nines and think hang on ?

SSS from the tees you played from will be used. Assuming SSS 72, your gross 76 would be Nett Differential -4 which is the ESR trigger. All you need to do now is do it again.

I have already done some lower rounds so possibly it will come into play ... Then I can put my feet up and say that was a good season :)

Just looked its 4 scores between my exceptionally low scores ... -10, +.1,+.1,-3,-4 (today) .... So could I see a drop of 1 or 2 ( or closest to 5.5?) as my average is -7 ...

Great shooting 6.9 now at least good going.
Cheers... Needed to have a little chat with myself after my first 9, was getting a bit uptight. Our 9 month old boy had me up a couple of times last night so I was a little sleep deprived. Had a panic attack this morning as well when I saw him climbing up the cot.

Been there! :) it only gets worse as they start running around and start climbing, my lad is now 4 and has taken to running off in shops to hide in clothing racks!

Oh Christ ! I was hoping to just hoof a football over his head and say fetch! Hopeful :o
i have also started showing him golf swings, hope he is paying attention! He loves watching me putt, finds it hysterical ( might be my poor style though)

How many comps have you played?
All season 9 in total, but they only count when the ESR is triggered and then it's the number of comps between the first trigger and the next -4 score to SSS or CSS ... Just been looking it all up. Will be quite interesting to see the result.

I'm unsure what you mean when you say they only count when ESR is triggered. Can you get an ESR through a supp card?

I'm surprised your putting in Sup cards when you play enough medals to keep HC active anyway, that's pretty much what it was designed for.

You can play as many as you like but a maximum of 1 a week. And yes the supplementary card can trigger the ESR, what happens is you have a round of -4 or better to the CSS or SSS ( in the supplementary card case) and the ESR system says okay a good score. Then when you do it again it looks at the number of competitions in between and the average of the two triggering scores and works out an extra adjustment.

You can only have 10 Supplementary cards in any calendar year. And a club may specifically permit more than 1 a week.

Given the 10 per year allowance, it would not seem unreasonable for someone to top their competition cards up with supplementaries so that 10 or even a few more cards are returned over the year.

If the current handicap is not a reflection of ability, it would seem reasonable, if not obligatory to use Supplementaries. It's the same prssure as if in a competition anyway. The US/Slope effectively treats every round as a Supplementaty!

I know exactly how Sup cards and ESR work, my view is they are for folk who cannot keep a handicap active due to working when comps on etc. I disagree that they should be used by people who can play comps and are only using them to try and get cuts as they cannot get a cut in medal play (call it nerves or whatever). Disagree that sup cards should trigger ESR also. 10 a year max is probably a right amount of sup cards

I'm not saying my view is right, but it is my view.

From the EGU site

Supplementary Scores was a new concept introduced in the 2008-2011 CONGU UHS and was intended to aid in the number of qualifying scores returned by members. Up until January 2011 restrictions were imposed on Cat 1 players and those that had returned at least 7 qualifying scores the previous year. From 2011 however these restrictions have now been removed and now allow all Home members of the club to return up to 10 Supplementary Scores per calendar year

@Vaentino. I was under the impression that SGU didn't implement ESRs. Has that changed?

Imurg is the king of supplementary cards going from 9-5 doing it ask him he'll tell you all about it. Its a load of tosh same with this ESR cack.

You play in a sweep or a medal and get cut or go up one thats the way it should be. I work shifts so only get about 20 -25 comps a year but our club don't regonise supplementary cards.

I personally think anything allows a golfer with ambition to have his handicap cut to be a good idea, I have also stated on other threads that the CSS did not in my opinion reflect what was a good round or not. So in my case I am confident enough to say that I have forgone a medal win, which would have been nice but I just want the cut, not some poor souls money in the pro shop account.
The supplementary system is good in that you do risk your handicap you can go up or down. I suggest you go out and try and play to your handicap or better, not show up for a knock have a couple of gimmes and then tot up afterwards.... You can appreciate then that it isn't as easy as it sounds, plus those that can play well below should receive a generous cut.

I suppose it depends if you want a vanity handicap or one gained in comps.

i've played in 18 comps this year, and gone from 7.4 to 5.7 all in competition cuts no esr (we don't have them up here) or supp cards.

i'll have the one gained in comps thanks:cool:
